Malcolm X is a towering figure in American history and one of the most influential civil rights leaders of the 20th century. Born Malcolm Little in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1925, he would go on to become a force for change in the fight for Black liberation in America. From his early experiences with racism to his leadership role in the Nation of Islam, Malcolm X's life was marked by a relentless pursuit of justice and equality for Black people.

But the insurgency faltered. To revive it, King made a sacrificial act on Good Friday, April 12, 1963: he was arrested. On May 30, 2020, in Omaha, Nebraska, amid the protests that rocked our nation after George Floyd’s death at the hands of police, thirty-eight-year-old white bar owner and Marine veteran Jake Gardner fatally shot James Scurlock, a twenty-two-year-old Black protestor and young father.
