奈良県天理市の石上神宮は、大和朝廷に重んぜられた、極めて古い歴史を誇る神社である。主祭神は、天孫降臨前の国津神の平定や神武東征で使われた、神剣・布都御魂剣（ふつのみたまのつるぎ）に宿る神霊とされ、その祭祀は、神事と軍事を司る物部氏が行っていた。明治に禁足地を調査したところ、古代の七支刀が発見された事でも知られる。祭神の一柱には、スサノオノミコトが八岐大蛇を斬った剣も含まれているのだが、一方で、日本書紀には八岐大蛇を斬った剣は吉備にあると書かれ、古語拾遺には後に石上神宮へ遷されたとある。その吉備の、剣があったという場所に建つのが、岡山県赤磐市の石上布都魂神社である。この神社の社伝によれば、八岐大蛇を斬ったその剣こそが、布都御魂剣という。岡山県の山間部に鎮座するこの神社は、山の麓に建つが、かつては山頂に社殿が営まれ、今もそこには大きな磐座がある。そこは石上神宮と同じく、禁足地となっている。神社の宮司は、今も物部姓だ。この近くには、弓削という地名もある。弓削の名が付く地名は全国にいくらかあり、それは道鏡を輩出したことで有名な古代の氏族・弓削氏の住んだ場所であるが、弓削氏とはその名の通り武器製作を生業とした民で、物部氏の一派であった。神話に遡る石上の信仰と、磐座の祭祀。古の人々が重視した「石」の意味に迫る。
