The Elements of Style by William Strunk, Jr. is an American English writing style guide. ＜あらすじ＞
一人の若侍が練り馬場と呼ばれる草原へ入って来た。しかし、七つの鐘を聞いて起きてきたはずの彼であったが、間もなく七つの鐘が鳴り、刻を間違えたことを悟った。約束の六つ半まで三時間あるが、辺りは酷く寒い。川岸をしばし歩いた彼は、橋の下に焚火が燃えていたのを目にした。近付いて見ると、「夫婦乞食」と呼ばれている老夫婦が鍋を掛けており、「よろしかったら、こちらへ来ておあたりになりませんか」と声を掛けられた。
　若侍はそれに応じて火に当たったが、老人たちの荷物の中に刀の柄が見えた。若侍が尋ねると、老人は元侍であることを告白し、若侍は時間潰しがてら、その告白に耳を傾けるのだった……
