岡山市の吉備津神社は、備中一宮。祭神の吉備津彦命は、大和朝廷の黎明期、全国平定の為に派遣された「四道将軍」の一人だが、当地では「温羅（うら）」という鬼を退治したと伝わり、昔話「桃太郎」のモデルとされる。境内には、拝殿や本殿とは別に「御釜殿」という建物があり、その鳴り具合により吉凶を占っている。斬られても唸り続ける温羅の首を鎮める為、温羅の妻・阿曽媛（あぞひめ）に、その上で神饌を炊かせたのが起源とされ、阿曽媛の出身地・阿曽郷から選ばれた「阿曽女（あぞめ）」が、今に至るまで仕えている。阿曽郷は、古くから製鉄を生業とした地であり、温羅の居城とされる鬼ノ城（きのじょう）の麓でもあるのだが、その鬼ノ城は、「朝鮮式山城」と呼ばれる、古代に築かれた城跡だ。その他数多くの伝承地があるが、それは同時に古代遺跡であることも多い。そもそも、一帯には数多くの古墳が存在し「吉備路」と呼ばれる観光地となっている。温羅伝説とは、古代、製鉄で栄えた「吉備王国」が朝廷に討伐されたことを伝えるものらしい。その伝承の中心地・吉備津神社は、盛池雄峰、高橋御山人両名の「人生の分岐点」でもあった。「まつろわぬ」鬼と鉄と巫女とが「運命」を教え導く神社の思い出を語り合う。

岐阜県の飛騨・美濃両地域の神社仏閣に、「両面宿儺（りょうめんすくな）」の伝説がある。彼は、二つの顔に、各四本の手足を持つ超人で、日本書紀にも仁徳朝の飛騨に現れたと書かれている。書紀では、人民を害し、朝廷に従わず討たれたとされ、岐阜県内の神社においても、書紀に近い伝承を伝える事が多い。一方、県内の寺院においては、善政を施した豪族や、龍を討った英雄、観音の化身などとして語られる。最も有名な伝承地は、円空作の宿儺像が残る、高山市東部、丹生川の千光寺だ。丹生川の北アルプスの麓には、宿儺が出現したという洞窟もある。高山市街、日本三大夜祭・高山祭で有名な桜山八幡宮他、美濃から丹生川へ至るルート沿いには、朝廷軍の進軍を伝える八社の八幡神社が鎮座する。高山市南部の飛騨一宮・水無神社には驚くべき伝承がある。ここでは「七儺（しちな）」という女の龍を宿儺が討ったとされているが、中世の記録によれば、水無神社の神体山・位山に宿儺が降臨し、神武天皇に皇位を授けたという。位山は、古代の祭祀遺構である巨石が数多く存在し、飛騨こそ大和以前の皇室のルーツだとする「異端」の説もある。「堕落論」で有名な坂口安吾氏も、宿儺や「飛騨王朝説」について調査し著述している。聖俗の交錯する異形の超人伝承の謎に挑む。
