宮崎県北東部の山間にある高千穂は、神話伝承の地である。天照大神の孫・ニニギノミコトが天照大神の命を受け、地上の統治の為に高天原より降臨した場所が、この高千穂とされ、天孫降臨の地として知られる。それだけでなく、高千穂には様々な神話伝承地があり、その中でも有名なものが、天岩戸神社だ。この神社の御神体は渓流沿いの岩窟であるが、これこそ天照大神が隠れた岩戸だという。その他、岩戸隠れの際、八百万の神々が集まって相談したという天安河原や、高天原の水を移したという天真名井など、数々の伝承地があるのだが、高千穂には、こうした「聖なる神々」の伝承地だけでなく、荒ぶる「まつろわぬ」鬼たちの伝承もある。その代表的なものが、神武天皇の兄に討たれた鬼八（きはち）であり、夜神楽で有名な高千穂神社には、その討伐の様子が彫刻されている。また、日向国風土記逸文には、天孫ニニギノミコトの降臨時、地上は暗闇に覆われていたが、二人の土蜘蛛の助言で明るくなったという神話が載っている。ここでは天孫に協力しているが、土蜘蛛は、記紀・風土記で天皇に逆らう土着の勢力として描かれ、後世には人を食う妖怪とされている。「魔」の影ちらつく神話の舞台の謎を解く。

秋田県にある「秋田三湖」と呼ばれる三つの湖。その全てに龍の伝説が伝わっている。まずは、田沢湖の「辰子姫」。このあたりに住んでいた人間の娘・辰子は、永遠の美を求めて観音菩薩に願を掛け、お告げにより山中の泉の水を飲んだ。しかし喉が渇いて際限なく水を飲み続け、龍の姿に変ってしまった。そこで仕方なく泉を広げて湖とし、そこに住んだ。これが田沢湖だという。湖畔のその泉の近くには、辰子姫を祭る御座石神社が建っている。青森との県境にある十和田湖にも、近くに住んでいたマタギの若者「八郎太郎」が、掟を破って仲間のイワナまで食べてしまい、川の水を飲み続けて龍となり、十和田湖を作って住んだという伝説がある。そこに、熊野で修業を積んだ山伏「南祖坊（なんそのぼう）」が現れる。南祖坊は「草鞋が切れた場所が終の棲家となる」という神託とともに鉄の草鞋を授かり、その切れた場所が十和田湖だった。南祖坊はここで龍に化身して八郎太郎と戦い、勝利する。これが十和田神社に祭られる青龍権現である。敗れた八郎太郎は西へ逃れて湖を作って住む。これが八郎潟であり、湖岸の八郎神社に祭られている。その八郎潟を戦後干拓して作ったのが大潟村で、入植した村民により建てられた大潟神社にも、八郎太郎は祭られている。古の龍伝説を辿り、明日にまで展望を広げた未来志向対談。
