Born in Walcha, NSW, he joined the Army in 1987 and by 1990 had passed SAS selection. He went on to serve six years in the Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) with K Troop, 3 Squadron, rotating through counter-terrorist teams and the full spread of special forces courses before discharging in 1996.

Tom joined Victoria Police in 1999, passed the Special Operations Group (SOG) selection in 2002, and went on to spend around 20 years in the SOG. He was on the ground for some of Victoria's most significant sieges and counter-terror operations. Medically retired in 2025 with complex PTSD, he now mentors the next generation chasing SOG selection — and sits down on the podcast to tell the stories from a lifetime at the pointy end.

Max Mitchell spent over four decades in the NSW Police Force, rising from a young constable in Newcastle in 1981 to Assistant Commissioner. Along the way he worked as a detective, police negotiator, and undercover supervisor, and commanded some of the state's busiest regions. He led the NSW police response to the 2011 Christchurch earthquake, stood up the state's Police Transport Command from scratch, and drove major reforms that cut alcohol-related violence in Newcastle's nightlife precincts. A recipient of the Australian Police Medal and holder of degrees in investigation and terrorism studies, Max retired in 2022 as Northern Region Commander after a career defined by frontline policing, crisis leadership, and reform.

A former Australian Army infantry soldier with the 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, Thompson served in East Timor and Afghanistan. During his 2009 deployment to Afghanistan, he shot and killed an armed insurgent, and just two weeks later was severely wounded in action by an improvised explosive device (IED).

After leaving the military, he moved into politics, being elected as the Federal Member for the Queensland electorate of Herbert in the Australian House of Representatives, representing the Liberal National Party (LNP). He also serves as Shadow Minister for Defence Industry and Shadow Minister for Defence Personnel.
