  • Ep. 84 - Service Shaming in Academia & How to Fix It (with Dr. Cullen Merritt)
    2025/07/08

    Send us a text

In this powerful episode, Dr. Cullen C. Merritt, Associate Professor and Research Director at the University of Maryland, joins me to unpack the often-overlooked issue of service shaming in academia. Drawing from his eye-opening op-ed in Inside Higher Ed, Cullen explains how universities publicly promote service as a core mission—yet internally discourage faculty from engaging in it, especially when it comes to mentoring students or serving communities.

He shares moving stories from his research, including faculty who’ve faced emotional and even physical consequences for prioritizing service. We explore why service matters, how it strengthens research and teaching, and what institutions must do to truly value it. Whether you're a current or future faculty member, this conversation offers vital insights for anyone invested in improving higher education.

  • Ep. 82 - A Better Way to Think About Summer Writing Goals
    2025/06/04

    Send us a text

In this re-released episode, I explore a radically different way to think about time and procrastination—one that offers more freedom, not less. Inspired by Oliver Burkeman’s book Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals, this episode dives into why most time management advice fails us, and what to do instead.

You’ll learn how to “procrastinate better” by focusing on what truly matters, how to avoid falling into the Planning Fallacy trap, and why saying “no” to good opportunities might be the key to real progress.

Whether you’re heading into summer with big writing goals or just trying to get through your to-do list without burning out, this episode offers thoughtful, practical strategies to help you do less—and accomplish more.

  • Ep. 77 - Why Academics Hate Self-Promotion (But Need to Do It Anyway)
    2025/03/25

    Send us a text

Why do so many academics cringe at the thought of self-promotion? In this episode, I dive into why scholars struggle to share their work—and why keeping quiet isn’t neutral anymore.

With higher education under attack and misinformation everywhere, I truly believe researchers have a moral obligation to make their insights accessible. But self-promotion doesn’t have to feel like bragging or selling out. Instead, it can be a powerful way to connect, make an impact, and ensure that your work reaches the people who need it most.

In this episode, I cover: the three biggest reasons academics avoid self-promotion, two simple mindset shifts to help you share about your work with more confidence, and how self-promotion, when done right, is actually a form of academic activism.

If you’ve ever hesitated before posting about your ideas and accomplishments, this episode is for you. And stay tuned for Part 2, where I’ll talk about how to self-promote without losing self-respect.
