  • Episode 11: Bobby Mackey’s Music World: The Slaughterhouse Honky-Tonk
    2026/10/29

Just across the Ohio River in Wilder, Kentucky sits a stretch of muddy embankment with a reputation darker than the deep water beside it. Before the neon lights flickered on, before country legends picked guitar strings on stage, and long before the mechanical bull drew crowds of thrill-seekers, this riverfront site was drenched in more than a century of blood, bootlegging, and brutality.

Tonight, we step inside Bobby Mackey’s Music World—a notorious roadside roadhouse built over an industrial slaughterhouse runoff well, fortified by mob syndicates during Prohibition, and cursed by violent tragedies that refused to stay buried. We trace the site from its 1850s meatpacking origins and the gruesome 1896 headless murder of Pearl Bryan to the tragic speakeasy lore of Johanna, the harrowing 1980s exorcism of caretaker Carl Lawson, and what remains after the historic structure was reduced to rubble in 2024.

Pull up a stool, double-check that the doors are locked, and pour yourself something dark. Behind these walls, every foundation tells a story... and the past refuses to fade.

The Blood and Sand (Kentucky Roadhouse Variation)

A Prohibition-era staple originally created in 1922 and named for Rudolph Valentino’s bullfighting drama. While historically poured with blended Scotch, this variation swaps in a high-proof American bourbon or rye to match the Kentucky border country setting of the episode.

    • Glass: Chilled coupe or Nick & Nora

    • Tools: Cocktail shaker, Hawthorne strainer, fine mesh strainer (optional, for a crystal-clear wash), jigger

    • 3/4 oz (22.5 ml) Bourbon or Rye Whiskey (100-proof recommended)

    • 3/4 oz (22.5 ml) Sweet Vermouth (such as Carpano Antica, Cocchi Storico, or Dolin Rouge)

    • 3/4 oz (22.5 ml) Cherry Heering Liqueur (do not substitute with bright red maraschino cordial)

    • 3/4 oz (22.5 ml) Fresh-squeezed orange juice (strained to remove heavy pulp)

    1. Chill the Glass: Place your coupe glass in the freezer or fill it with ice water while preparing the cocktail.

    2. Combine Ingredients: Pour the bourbon/rye, sweet vermouth, Cherry Heering, and fresh orange juice into the cocktail shaker.

    3. Add Ice & Shake: Fill the shaker tin completely with fresh ice cubes. Seal tightly and shake vigorously for 12 to 15 seconds until the exterior of the tin is thoroughly frosted.

    4. Strain: Empty the chilling ice from your coupe glass. Double strain the deep reddish-amber liquid into the chilled coupe to catch tiny ice shards.

    5. Garnish: Drop a dark brandied cocktail cherry (such as Luxardo) into the bottom of the glass, or express the aromatic oils of a wide fresh orange twist over the surface and set it on the rim.

    • Profile: Balanced equal-parts cocktail; sweet stone-fruit richness from the Cherry Heering and herbal depth from the sweet vermouth, cut by bright citrus acidity and anchored by high-proof whiskey oak.

    • Pro Tip: Freshly squeezed orange juice is mandatory. Bottled pasteurized orange juice has excess sugar and lack of natural citric acid, which will make an equal-parts Blood and Sand cloying rather than balanced.

  • Episode 10: The Cecil Hotel — Gilded Dreams, Broken Glass, and Hotel Death
    2026/10/22

Rising fourteen stories above Downtown Los Angeles, the Cecil Hotel opened in the roaring 1920s as a beacon of Beaux-Arts opulence—a grand destination of marble lobbies, stained glass, and brass elevators. But as the city around it shifted and the shadow of Skid Row crept toward its marble doorstep, the Cecil began to swallow the desperate, the transient, and the wicked.

Behind its ornate brick facade lies a century of unexplained violence, unsolved deaths, and an oppressive, suffocating energy that seems baked directly into the mortar. From notorious serial killers walking its carpeted hallways to cold-case murders and the haunting mystery of the rooftop water tanks, the Cecil isn't just a historic hotel—it is a physical monument to tragedy.

Step inside the lobby, shut out the noise of the street, and listen closely to what lingers in the halls.

    • Grand Ambition to Skid Row Shadow: The rise of a 1920s architectural icon and the rapid decline that turned its suites into transient waystations.

    • The Dark Guests: How predators like the "Night Stalker" Richard Ramirez and Austrian killer Jack Unterweger slipped unnoticed through its revolving doors.

    • The Unsolved on the Higher Floors: The forgotten tragedies within its walls, including the 1964 cold case of "Pigeon Goldie" Osgood.

    • The Cistern on the Roof: The haunting 2013 disappearance and elevator footage that turned the Cecil into an international modern ghost story.

    • The Foundation That Traps the Past: Why century-old structures absorb the psychic weight of the lives lost inside them.

Crafted to reflect the deep, pitch-black darkness of the Cecil’s history topped with a deceptive, pale velvet foam.

    • Ingredients:

      • 2 oz Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon

      • ¾ oz Crème de Mûre (Blackberry Liqueur)

      • ¾ oz Fresh Lemon Juice

      • 1 Egg White (or cocktail foamer)

      • 1 Fresh Rosemary Sprig

    • How to Build:

      • Combine the bourbon, Crème de Mûre, lemon juice, egg white, and rosemary sprig in a shaker without ice.

      • Dry shake vigorously for 15 seconds to emulsify the foam.

      • Add ice and shake hard until the tin is frosty.

      • Double-strain into a chilled coupe glass and allow it to settle into its signature dark base and white froth cap.

      • Garnish with a fresh sprig of rosemary across the top.

  • Episode 9: The RMS Queen Mary — The Grey Ghost of Long Beach
    2026/10/15

Step up the gangway, bootleggers. Today on Whispers in the Walls, I am taking you aboard an 81,000-ton floating labyrinth of steel where high-society royalty once sipped champagne by night, and wartime horrors turned the bowels of the ship into an inescapable iron tomb: The RMS Queen Mary.

Long before she was permanently moored in Long Beach, California, as one of the most notoriously haunted landmarks in the world, she was "Hull Number 534"—a symbol of industrial triumph built during the crushing depths of the Great Depression. Stripped down for World War II, painted in camouflage, and rechristened "The Grey Ghost," she broke maritime records carrying over 16,000 troops at a time through boiling seas and rogue waves under a direct bounty from Adolf Hitler.

Then, on a gray October afternoon in 1942, her ironclad orders never to stop for anything collided with catastrophe—slicing her own Royal Navy escort, the HMS Curacoa, cleanly in two and leaving 338 men behind in the freezing Atlantic.

Join me as I explore the history, the human tragedy, and the lingering energy etched into her bulkheads:

    • 🍸 Pick Your Poison: Pouring a classic 1930s Sidecar to capture the golden age of transatlantic Art Deco luxury.

    • 🚢 The Floating Palace: The John Brown & Co. shipyards, rare exotic hardwoods, and the glory years of the Verandah Grill and Cabin Class dining salon.

    • ⚔️ The Grey Ghost: Blackout conditions, 120-degree lower decks, and a near-capsizing 52-degree roll in a 90-foot rogue wave.

    • 🌊 The Sinking of the HMS Curacoa: The collision off the Irish coast, the detonation of live depth charges, and the devastating silence of the aftermath.

    • 👻 The Permanent Residents: The violent disturbances of Stateroom B340, phantom splashes in the drained First Class pool, Winston Churchill’s cigar smoke in Suite M61, and the tragic spirit of 18-year-old John Pedder by watertight Door 13.

    • 2.0 oz Cognac (or quality French brandy)

    • 0.75 oz Cointreau (or dry orange curaçao)

    • 0.75 oz Fresh squeezed lemon juice

    • Garnish: Superfine sugar rim & a lemon twist

    Preparation:

Rim half a chilled coupe glass with a lemon wedge and dip into superfine sugar. Add the Cognac, Cointreau, and fresh lemon juice to a cocktail shaker packed with ice. Shake vigorously for 20 seconds until frosty. Double-strain into your prepared glass. Bright, citrus-forward, and packing a classic punch.
