  • The First Generation SLP2Be & Mentor: @SimpleSpeechie
    2021/04/08

Tammy Le, is a first-generation graduate student at Northwestern University, the #2 ranked graduate speech-language pathology program in the nation. She graduated Cum Laude from DePaul University in November 2019 with a Bachelor of Arts in Human Development.

During her time as an undergraduate student, she was involved in several leadership positions and organizations. Tammy worked at a multidisciplinary clinic for children with developmental delays, mentored students through Chicago Public Schools, and volunteered as a Research Assistant at Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago to examine access to care for pediatric myalgic encephalomyelitis patients.

As an out-of-field major, Tammy quickly learned all the in’s & out’s to navigate the field of speech-language pathology. This challenge led to her founding the Pre-SLP Association at her undergraduate university, which created a vehicle of representation, advocacy, and mentorship for aspiring SLPs. As an outcome, the university will now be implementing an SLP graduate program this upcoming fall 2021.

Tammy was recently nominated to represent her cohort within Northwestern University’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee. She represents 2.8% of ASHA demographics, as a Vietnamese-American. Her⁣ hope for the field of speech-language pathology is to see growth, diversity, and equity. She states, “by allowing our differences to fuel our connection, we can strive towards cultural humility to best serve clients and their individualistic needs. While doing so, we can best serve each other by creating a safe and supportive environment for BIPOC.”

Her mentorship and advocacy fuel her passion for the field, and she wanted to carry on with this role during graduate school. As a result, she created a platform to connect and empower aspiring clinicians through their academic and professional endeavors.

Tammy’s interest lies in early intervention. She has a special interest in social and cognitive-communication disorders, accent modification, and working with underrepresented individuals. Tammy aspires to ultimately earn a Doctorate's degree to continually diversify higher education.⁣

    What we talk about:
    Tammy's experience as a first generation Vietnamese-American
Navigating her journey to graduate school after starting out as a business major
Choosing the right program and grad school advice
    Forms of self-care
