In this episode of the World Music Show, interviews from the archives, I re-airing my interview with singer and musician Sabina Sciubba. If you don’t know her solo work, you may remember her as part of The Brazilian Girls, or from her guest appearances on the TV show Baskets, which also starred Zach Galifinakas.

The Italian is just an icon all around. This interview first aired in September of 2023.

And just a note about this one–the sound quality isn’t great. She was in Italy and we were connecting over some program our engineers set up, but it wasn’t good. What was good though, is that after it aired, I got a lovely handwritten letter from someone who heard it in some faraway state and said it was one of the best interviews with her he’s ever heard. So, there’s that.

In this episode, I’m going back to one of my first interviews from the WMS. It’s with Dave Wakeling, English Beat or The Beat’s—depending on where they were at the time, frontman.

The writer and icon who wrote Save it for Later, and covered Smokey Robinson’s Tears of Clown, and the epic Mirror in the Bathroom. Along with bands like Madness, Dexy Midnight Runners, and the Specials, Wakeling was a major part of the Two-tone revival, which is an update of early Ska. His music has continued to show up in movies and on tv shows like the Bear or when musicians like Eddy Vedder cover them (like on the Bear).

I caught up with Wakeling back in 2016!! When he had just finished a show the night before at the National in Richmond. I can’t remember now though, if he was doing another show that night or if they were getting ready to take off again. Either way, I was lucky enough to chat with him in their big tour bus–and I’m not sure if you can tell when you hear this, but I was really nervous. The English Beat’s music was a big part of my high school years growing up in LA, which is where Wakeling lives now.

We talk about how the Beat formed, his writing style, politics and how his new record Here we go Love was coming along. And if you stick it out until the end, you can hear Dave do a couple of Legal IDs for the show I used to have.

In this episode, I’m re-airing my interview with Thomas Dolby.

Dolby, as you may know, rose to fame in the 1980s with She Blinded me with Science, Windpower and so much more. I got to interview him for the NPR show, Full Disclosure with Roben Farzad, for which I am the producer. It aired around this time last year and it’s another two-parter.

We talk all about his long music career but also dive into his foray into Silicon Valley and the company he founded. And we also discuss his literary works as well–I highly recommend reading his book The Speed of Sound: Breaking the Barriers Between Music and Technology: A Memoir

At the time Dolby wasn’t touring, nor had he toured in a long time. That has since changed, as he is on tour now called Totally Tubular, playing alongside bands like ____

I got to see him when he first set out on the road, here in Richmond Va at the Tin Pan–sadly, I couldn’t swing a meet and greet..but I did buy an autographed copy of his memoir. Also, you can watch this interview on the Full Disclosure YouTube page, I put a link in the show notes.

First, so sorry for the delay in getting this next episode out of the archive show…Been a bit busy. But you’re in for a special treat. This is a two-parter featuring the great music producer Sebastian Krys. If you don’t know his name, you may know the artists he’s worked with Gloria Estefan, Marc Anthony, Celia Cruz, Ricky Martin and Will Smith–but it was his producing of four Elvis Costello records, Look Now, Hey Clockface, The Boy Named If and the fantastic reworking of Costello’s This Year’s Model, called Spanish Model.

For this fourth episode, it’s my conversation with the cool musician Jack Johnson. Johnson has a new record out called SURFILMUSIC. It’s a new documentary chronicling Jack Johnson’s evolution from surfer to filmmaker to world-renowned musician. So not only is there music, but as you can guess–a film too. The link is in the show notes. He’s also going out on tour.

But this interview took place just after his album called In Between Dub came out back in 2023, which features some of the last recordings of dub pioneer Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry.

When we spoke, he was in his home studio on the island of Oahu and I was in my studio in Richmond, Va. We talk about the how Lee influenced the album, Jack’s love of surfing and the best burrito place in Santa Barbara.
