  • Sleep Story: Mark Twain: The Man Who Preferred Cats to People
    2026/08/22

Tonight’s story is inspired by the true story of Mark Twain and his lifelong love of cats.

At times, Twain’s household was home to as many as nineteen of them.

They had names like Sour Mash, Beelzebub, Blatherskite, Satan, Pestilence, Bambino, Sackcloth and Ashes—because apparently ordinary cat names simply weren’t an option.

Cats slept on his manuscripts. One kitten discovered that a billiard table pocket made an excellent place to sit during a game. And when Twain traveled and couldn’t bring his own cats with him, he sometimes borrowed or rented kittens so he wouldn’t have to spend the summer without feline company.

Twain admired cats for their independence, honesty, and complete lack of concern for human importance. He once wrote that crossing a man with a cat would improve the man…but degrade the cat.

    The fire burns low.

    The house grows quiet.

And somewhere nearby… there is always a cat.

This is a slow, ambient bedtime story designed to help you unwind, quiet your mind, and gently fall asleep. Inspired by true events, it’s a warm and softly humorous nighttime story about writing, companionship, wonderfully ridiculous cat names, and one of America’s greatest writers discovering that sometimes the best company requires no conversation at all.

    So settle in…

and spend a quiet evening with Mark Twain and his cats.

  • Sleep Story: Hemingway and the Six-Toed Cats: The House the Cats Inherited
    2026/08/15

Tonight’s story is inspired by the true story of Ernest Hemingway, his famous six-toed cats, and the extraordinary colony of cats that still calls his Key West home their own.

It begins in the 1930s, when a sea captain gives Hemingway a white polydactyl kitten—a cat born with extra toes and the broad, mitten-like paws sailors had considered lucky for generations.

    Her name was Snow White.

Soon, one cat led to another.

Cats wandered through Hemingway’s writing room, stretched across the warm stone floors, explored the tropical gardens, and settled wherever they pleased while Hemingway worked nearby.

Decades passed. Hemingway left Key West. His home eventually became a museum.

    But the cats stayed.

Today, around fifty cats still roam the gardens and verandas of the Hemingway Home, many carrying the famous polydactyl trait that has become inseparable from the story of the house.

    The palm fronds move gently.
    The fountain continues.
And at Hemingway’s house… the cats remain.

This is a slow, ambient bedtime story designed to help you unwind, quiet your mind, and gently fall asleep. Inspired by true events, it’s a peaceful nighttime story about tropical evenings, literary history, extraordinary cats, and the small acts of care that sometimes continue long after we’re gone.

    So settle in…

and spend a warm evening with the cats of Key West.

  • Sleep Story: Churchill and Jock - The Cat Who Never Left Chartwell
    2026/08/08

Tonight’s story is inspired by the true story of Winston Churchill and Jock, the beloved ginger-and-white cat who became part of life at Churchill’s country home, Chartwell.

In 1962, on Churchill’s 88th birthday, his private secretary gave him a small ginger kitten with a white bib and four white paws. Churchill named him Jock.

    Soon, Jock was everywhere.

Beside Churchill’s chair as he read.

    Nearby while he painted.

Exploring the gardens and sunny windowsills of Chartwell.

And at the dinner table, where Churchill reportedly refused to begin his meal until Jock had arrived.

Their companionship was simple and quiet—a warm fire, a familiar house, the Kent countryside outside, and a cat who seemed to know exactly when to stay close.

And when Churchill was gone, an extraordinary tradition began: the family requested that Chartwell always be home to a ginger cat with a white bib and white paws named Jock. More than sixty years later, that tradition continues.

    The fire burns softly.
    The garden grows still.
    And at Chartwell… Jock remains.
