  • Little Acts of Kindness | UA130
    2023/08/15

Little acts of kindness are like little acts of magic. They lighten our moods, tone down our cynicism, reduce our pessimism, and make us feel less judgmental about others and ourselves.

The tiniest things we do can make a huge difference to someone else. When we intentionally extend our goodwill to another person, they can feel it. We might be the only live person they interact with that day. Our kindness can create an important sense of connection and belonging for them - and for us too!

Let’s create that feeling of us all being there for all of us.

    DISCOVER WHO YOU ARE

If you’re not leading the life you want, you can build the mindset, emotional and intuitive skills to change that. I use my experience as a lawyer, business leader, artist and coach to help my clients discover who they are and live the life they desire.

    ABOUT ME:

I’m a former international tax lawyer and senior partner of Ernst & Young in Toronto, where I serviced banks and other large multinationals and led a large group of professionals.

My life expanded when I left the law in 2014 to learn how to paint, something I’d always dreamt of doing, but had no reason to believe was possible for me. After a couple years of painting and selling my work, I became passionate about helping other people who yearn to feel more personally fulfilled, invigorated and soul connected in their lives every day, and I became certified as a life coach.

I now spend my time painting, coaching, and creating live events at GRACE Studio (more formally, the “George Russell Academy of Creative Expansion”) in beautiful Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada. And, of course, producing this podcast for you.

We’re so consumed with just getting “it” done and moving on to the next thing that many of us have become completely disconnected from knowing what we like.

We think that what we like isn’t important. But that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Knowing what you like can help you create a life that feels richer and gives you an overall greater sense of wellbeing. Iit can help you make the best decisions about the steps you want to take next.

In this episode I talk about 4 methods you can use to unearth a deeper level of understanding about what you like and don’t like, so you can use that information to make the best choices for you.

  • Bravery and the Risk of Changing | UA128
    2023/08/01

Many of us think we’re not brave enough to make the changes we desire or want. Our overly dramatic, fear-based brains tell us we might possibly die if we do that. So we remain in jobs, relationships, geographies or lifestyles that no longer suit us.

In this episode, I discuss four categories of mistakes we make in the way we think about the risks and benefits of change that keep us stuck where we are.

  • An Intentional Life | UA127
    2023/07/25

A decision to live intentionally is a choice you can make at any time that will affect the quality and richness of your life.

Too often we forget how much agency we have in our own lives. In our 20’s, 30’s, 40’s and 50’s, we can find ourselves feeling rigidly contained by decisions we made early on. We doggedly stick to what we decided years ago and fail to understand our ability to make new choices more attuned with who we are now. We wait for our retirement, a time we believe we can really start living. Yet, when we retire, we fall into a new trap that constrains the choices we believe are available to us. Our false beliefs about what older people can and should do box us in.

A well-lived life is an intentional life. It’s a life where you deliberately choose to stay curious, maintain a sense of adventure, remain interested and open to new ideas, seek out opportunities, and focus on the things that matter to you, not on what you should be doing or on what you see other people do.

This episode is dedicated to my uncle, John Garry Kerr (April 30, 1932 – July 12, 2023), who served as an example for me and so many others about how to live intentionally, joyfully and exuberantly, always.

  • A Cool Way to Release Your Self Critic | UA125
    2023/07/04

I learned something so easy and profound last weekend when I attended a creativity retreat taught by Rob Bell and Elizabeth Gilbert at Omega Institute that I simply had to share it with you.

Pretty much everyone I know has a relentless self critic inside their heads. We think self criticism is what helps us improve. Instead it leads, at its worst, to self-loathing and, at its best, to inaction.

In this episode, I share a simple technique Elizabeth and Rob taught us that is both easy and transformative. Listen to this episode when you have time to pause it so you can try out this exercise yourself.

    2023/06/27

This episode is about what we make rejection mean and how we can deal with it more usefully when it surfaces.

Rejection can result from our misdiagnosis of an experience or situation. Or it can actually be real, in the sense that someone else doesn’t like something we’ve done or said or the work we’ve produced.

In either case, rejection doesn’t feel good, especially when we make it mean something terrible about us or our prospects.

Tune in now to hear 6 steps you can take the next time you feel rejected.

  • A Garden Tour and the Uniqueness of You | UA123
    2023/06/20

Last weekend, a gardening group in Prince Edward County where I live generously opened their homes and gardens for us to experience.

I walked away from the tour with a different result than I’d expected – not so much a list of plants or ideas I might use in my own garden, but a beautiful reminder of the enormous diversity and uniqueness of human creative expression, interest, preference and focus, of the very different things that cause each on of us to feel joyful, alive and connected.

One of the purposes of this podcast is to help you understand and believe that there's something deeply and uniquely creative inside you. And to know that whatever form you express that in is perfect. Your joy in doing it is enough.

When you share something you’ve created with someone else, it allows them to connect with you at a deeper level because the creative part of you is connecting with the creative part of them. And that’s a beautiful thing.

    DISCOVER WHO YOU ARE

If you’re focused on pleasing everyone around you, chances are you’re not leading the life you want. People pleasing is the main obstacle I help my clients tackle so that they can discover who they are and live the life they desire. If you suspect this might be you, but you’re not sure, I offer free coaching consultation calls where we’ll talk about what you want to do and why you’re not doing it. I’ll offer you my prescription and we’ll see if it makes sense to coach together. Use this link to book your session: https://gracedcanvascalendar.as.me/freestrategysession/.

Everything I offer helps you discover who you are. In my Creative Expansion newsletter, I share the kinds of insights I share in this podcast. Plus I let you know about my online coaching offers and live events and workshops here at GRACE Studio in Prince Edward County. Enjoy the scenery at my acreage and explore who you are through mindfulness, nature exploration, making art, creative writing, and other means to discover at a deeper level who you are and what you want. To subscribe for my newsletter, use the link at the bottom of page of my website, https://gracedcanvas.com/).
