At the height of her career, Michele made a life-changing decision. She walked away from the corporate world, moved to New York City, and publicly transitioned. The consequences were profound. She experienced estrangement from family, lost friendships, and watched much of the professional identity she had spent decades building slip away. But in the process of losing so much, Michele discovered something remarkable. She found her voice. Music became an outlet for the emotions, experiences, and truths she had carried for years. Through songwriting, Michele began exploring themes of identity, shame, love, failure, forgiveness, and redemption. Her journey also became the subject of the award-winning documentary Beautiful Lie, an intimate look at the complicated road toward self-acceptance. And perhaps one of the most moving chapters of her story is the reconciliation that followed. After years of heartbreak and separation, Michele eventually reunited with her wife and four daughters, finding a new path forward with the people she loves. Today, Michele is making music as Michele Bettencourt and Vampire Time, with an album that reflects her experiences and her evolution as both a woman and an artist. Her music video for "How Close (Will You Stand By Me)" is available now, with another video, "Taking Out the Trash," on the way. A new EP is also planned for early next year. Beyond her own music, Michele is a partner in Licorice Pizza Records, a growing Los Angeles-based vinyl record pressing company, record store, and event space dedicated to celebrating music and the artists who create it. In this candid and heartfelt conversation, Robert and Michele explore what it means to start over, the complicated nature of family and forgiveness, and how music can help us process even the most difficult chapters of our lives. Because sometimes the greatest success isn't measured by a job title, a bank account, or the life the world expects us to lead.
