Our brilliant Leadership, Talent and Capability team are fundamental to making this a reality and work really hard to ensure our learning offer is one of the best in government. The team launched our Talent Strategic Approach recently, which outlines our vision and direction for talent aligned to the People Strategy.

So, I was delighted to be joined by Head of Leadership Rachael Carr and Head of Talent Sam Brockwell on the importance of L&D; expanding your thinking; how to get the most out of your learning and discussed and some of the brilliant programmes we have on offer at the MoJ. This includes Discover Build Grow, and Learning to Lead, The Coaching and Mentoring Hub and Leadership School (which I can’t wait to attend this year!), to name a few.

I also touched on the importance of taking the time to listen and learn from colleagues at all levels, why a coaching and mentoring relationship is so helpful and tailoring your learning journey in a way that suits you.

This time round I’m joined by Chaz Josephs and Toni Woodrow for a conversation about how the hands on skills and experience they developed in front line roles are proving invaluable in their current positions.

Chaz, a former soldier in the army, is now a Senior HR Business Partner. And having spent time as a prison officer, and working with sex offenders in prisons, Toni now works in our Professional Behaviours Unit.

Providing opportunities to grow is one of the themes underpinning our People Strategy. This is all about learning and career pathways in the department, and applies just as much to us in People Group as anywhere else across the MoJ. So it was really positive to hear about the opportunities both Chaz and Toni had to build their knowledge, new skills and progress.

We even squeezed in some chat about Christmas traditions and dealing with the combination of kittens and Christmas trees…

I sat down with Fiona to discuss how people are at the centre of everything we do in government, the importance of getting the basics right in HR and what a great future looks like for the newly formed Government People Group.

Fiona was full of praise for some of the innovative things that we’re doing here in People Group and also shared her top career advice for HR professionals. We even managed to squeeze in some quickfire questions so you can get to know Fiona a bit better!

Fiona is responsible for the wellbeing of so many people so it was great to have a discussion on this and the challenges she is faced with.
