  • They Save Lives, But Who Saves the Healthcare Workers?Look After Your Colleagues
    2026/08/31

What happens when the person whose job is to care for other people's mental health begins to struggle with their own?

In this powerful and deeply personal episode of The Mind and Us, we hear the story of Mr. Herbie Nyathi, a mental health nurse who experienced unfair treatment at work and the profound impact it had on his own mental health and psychological wellbeing.

Herbie's story goes beyond healthcare. It explores what can happen when our working environment begins to affect our psychological health, confidence, wellbeing and ability to cope.

    Psychological Health at Work

We spend a huge part of our lives at work, yet workplace mental health and psychological wellbeing are often overlooked until someone reaches breaking point.

For healthcare workers, the emotional and psychological demands can be particularly intense. Nurses, mental health professionals, doctors, support workers and other healthcare staff spend their working lives caring for people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

    But who supports them?

Who listens when they are struggling?

Who protects their psychological wellbeing when the workplace itself becomes a source of distress?

And what happens when the people expected to care for everyone else don't feel cared for themselves?

Herbie's experience opens an important conversation about workplace mental health, psychological safety, workplace stress, employee wellbeing, burnout, workplace culture and unfair treatment at work.

    Healthcare Workers Need Care Too

    Healthcare professionals are human too.

Working in healthcare can involve high workloads, long hours, emotionally challenging situations, difficult workplace relationships and the responsibility of caring for vulnerable people.

Mental health nurses and other healthcare workers are often there to support people through anxiety, depression, trauma, crisis and mental illness. But being a healthcare professional does not make someone immune to mental health difficulties.

This episode asks whether enough is being done to protect the mental health and psychological wellbeing of healthcare staff, and whether healthcare organisations are creating environments where people feel safe to speak up, ask for help and be heard.

A Conversation Everyone Can Relate To

Although Herbie's story comes from healthcare employment, the issues discussed can affect anyone at work.

You may have experienced workplace stress, felt undervalued, been treated unfairly, struggled with workplace relationships, or felt unable to talk openly about your mental health.

You may be a manager or employer trying to create a healthier workplace. You may be supporting a colleague who is struggling. Or you may simply want to understand how work can affect psychological well being.

Mental health at work is everyone's issue.

A psychologically healthy workplace is about more than reducing stress. It is about creating an environment where people feel respected, heard, valued, supported and psychologically safe.

If this conversation resonates with you, share it with someone who needs to hear it.
