This week, we’re taking a look at the Twilight Zone episode “Eye of the Beholder.” Janet Tyler lives in a world behind a set of bandages, ones that cover not merely her face, but her thoughts. This is her final visit, the last chance for doctors to fix her deformed face. If they are successful, she will be able to take her place with the rest of normal society; however, if her visage is unchanged, she will need to be removed–one way or another. You see, in this Twilight Zone reality, people need to look a certain way and conform to that way, else they are not allowed to co-exist with the rest of society. Oh, the State does allow for undesirables to live; they just can’t live with everyone else. They must be removed. By the end of the episode, it is clear that Rod Serling has something to say about how we so easily accept the State coming in to take control, and I have a bit to say about this as well. In this KOI episode, we’ll talk about why Serling uses “The State” as concept; we’ll dive into whether or not there is any hope for us to cling to at the end; and I’ll reveal my moment of awe, a bit of a plea for the importance of discomfort. We're taking a look at one of my favorite Twilight Zone episodes this week: "The Howling Man." It's the story of David Ellington, played by H.M. Wynant. A man on a backpacking trip through Europe, gets caught in a bad storm. He finds an old castle being run by an order of monks, but something is not right. Rather than help David, they want him to leave. And there is a strange sound ringing throughout the halls of the castle, a howling. When David learns that there is a man being held captive in the castle, he tries to confront the head of the order, Brother Jerome, played by John Carradine. What happens next is something that David will never forget. We'll talk about why David is so easily tricked; we'll discuss why he feels so comfortable trusting the maid at the end; and I'll reveal my moment of awe, one that is roughly 20 years in the making. This week, we’re going to be looking at the Twilight Zone episode “The Man in the Bottle.” Arthur and Edna Castle own a respectable antique shop; however, business has not been booming, so when they are suddenly face-to-face with the opportunity to put in a few wishes, we can certainly understand why they give it a go. However, as is sometimes the case in life, things do not seem go as planned. As the old saying goes: be careful what you wish for; you might end up with a funny little mustache. This week, we're discussing the Twilight Zone episode "King Nine Will Not Return." Captain James Embry is waking up into a nightmare--face down in the African sands, B-52 bomber crashed in front of him, and no sign of his crew. All that is left to do is try and figure out exactly what happened here. For Jame Embry, played by actor Bob Cummings, this is going to be a tale directly out of both the Twilight Zone and Sherlock Holmes. In our analysis, we'll talk about whether or not understanding deductive and inductive reasoning would have helped Captain Embry; we'll get a bit speculative about time and space; and I'll reveal my moment of awe, which has to do with how our brains tend to fill in the gaps of particularly traumatic events.
