Spoiler alert: this week we’re analyzing the Twilight Zone episode “Static.” Ed bitterly sits in a boarding house with zombies. No, they aren’t real zombies; they are tv zombies–people who spend hours a day just staring at a picture tube. That’s something that Ed is just not willing to do. So, he goes into the basement to bring up his old radio. And when he starts to hear old shows from his childhood and golden hits from musicians like Tommy Dorsey, Ed finds himself as happy as anyone can be. But, there is something odd going on, something superstitious. Vinnie, a woman who was once Ed’s fiance, is quite concerned about his mental health. All day, he just sits in his room listening to the radio. Until finally, something happens that cannot be explained. On this episode of KOI: A Twilight Zone Show, we’re going to be discussing whether or not there is room for audio-only entertainment in an age of easy video; we’ll ask the question: will television watching ever go through a nostalgic revival?; and I’ll reveal my moment of awe, some thoughts on a particular character from this episode that is near and dear to my heart. So, grab your keys, and let’s open up this door to the fifth dimension.

No show did a better job than The Twilight Zone at generating awe and wonder within its audience. It just so happens that awe is exactly what we need in these difficult, divisive times.
