    Neurodivergence: embracing your difference

NB: During the welcome to this episode of The Different Stories Podcast and during the conversation itself, you will hear it referred to as The Other Stories Podcast.

That was the original name of the podcast until we were requested to change it in November 2023, due to the presence of another podcast of the same name, of a completely different genre.

The podcast is now known as The Different Stories Podcast across all platforms.

In this episode of The Different Stories Podcast we to Deborah Henley talk about the importance of embracing individuality and self-expression rather than quashing it - of being who we are and seeing ADHD as a gift whilst acknowledging it’s challenges too. Following her parents’ separation and several years of expat life in Hong Kong, Deborah was sent to various boarding schools in UK. Moving from school to school, and having to adapt to each one, made her recognise her differences.

Now with a diagnosis of ADHD, which came in her early 40’s, she’s much better placed to make sense of both her struggles and capabilities.

She talks about the isolation she felt and still feels, the sensory overwhelm she experiences and getting access to the many tools she now uses to manage this.

We also look at how being a lifelong observer of life contributes to her being the skilled photographer she is.

When childhood sexual abuse takes place behind closed doors the child has no point of reference so often doesn’t know that what’s happening shouldn’t be happening. All they know is that they want to avoid being left with the perpetrator at all costs, often creating complex post-traumatic stress disorder. In this episode, Carolyn Whitehouse shares her story of how she chose university as her route out only to discover the longer term impact on her corporate and business career, of that undiagnosed C-PTSD.

Because Catherine Stratta was ‘doing alright’ at school and then at medical school, her periods of depression were thought to be nothing more than normal hormonal issues. In this episode she shares her story of how her eventual diagnosis gradually allowed her to feel able to open up about her disorder. That opening up has bought into her strengths and helped her find her sense of purpose. With that comes a sense of peace and stability and it now gives her joy to be able to give her clients some of that too.

Seemingly out of the blue, her young daughter began experiencing pain in her joints and mysterious rashes. Two and a half years later plus a lot of questions asked, she has been diagnosed with a hypermobility spectrum disorder and is awaiting confirmation of a further diagnosis of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a connective tissue disease with 13* different manifestations or types. The most common of these is the hypermobility type, with stretchy and fragile tissues creating havoc throughout the body and causing symptoms such as joint pain, digestive impairment, chronic fatigue, dizziness and palpitations. The others are extremely rare. In this episode, Holly Stone shares her story of living with the hypermobility type of EDS, how it was misdiagnosed for years and how that made her feel. Holly reminds any listeners who might have similar undiagnosed health struggles: ‘If you can’t connect the issues, think connective tissues!’

*Please note that in the audio recording, Holly refers to 12 different types. This was the case until just a few years ago when a 13th type was confirmed.
