このコンテンツについて

The Different Stories Podcast is a collection of honest, open and sometimes candid conversations with people from a whole range of marginalised, under-represented and unheard groups who share their stories about feeling different from the mainstream, of feeling ‘other.’ By inviting them to share their stories of how they felt different, how they were treated differently and how they would prefer to be treated going forward, my intention is to give you an opportunity to walk a while in their shoes, to listen and learn and ultimately to make some small changes in your attitude and behaviour so that you become even more inclusive. When we walk in others’ shoes, we start to understand and when we understand, the world becomes a kinder place. 社会科学

    Neurodivergence: embracing your difference

NB: During the welcome to this episode of The Different Stories Podcast and during the conversation itself, you will hear it referred to as The Other Stories Podcast.

That was the original name of the podcast until we were requested to change it in November 2023, due to the presence of another podcast of the same name, of a completely different genre.

The podcast is now known as The Different Stories Podcast across all platforms.

In this episode of The Different Stories Podcast we to Deborah Henley talk about the importance of embracing individuality and self-expression rather than quashing it - of being who we are and seeing ADHD as a gift whilst acknowledging it’s challenges too. Following her parents’ separation and several years of expat life in Hong Kong, Deborah was sent to various boarding schools in UK. Moving from school to school, and having to adapt to each one, made her recognise her differences.

Now with a diagnosis of ADHD, which came in her early 40’s, she’s much better placed to make sense of both her struggles and capabilities.

Karen Kodish was diagnosed Autistic at 47, ADHD at 48, as having Irlen Syndrome at 49 as well as self-identifying as having PDA.

In this episode she shares the sheer relief and grief she felt at hearing the news. Finally she was able to make sense of so much of her life, having always felt herself to be an outsider, observing her own life from the periphery.

She talks about the isolation she felt and still feels, the sensory overwhelm she experiences and getting access to the many tools she now uses to manage this.

We also look at how being a lifelong observer of life contributes to her being the skilled photographer she is.
