  • How to Develop Styles of Play for Decision Making and Success
    2023/04/14

Basketball Styles of Play are a framework on which your offensive and defensive strategies are built.

They provide a framework for your players to understand the outcomes you are trying to achieve at different moments in a game.

Having a style of play on both defense and offense can help athletes make better decisions and also adds to teamwork.

So here, Coach Craig Rowe outlines on of Australia's National basketball team's former styles of play: Pace, Poise, Penetration.

He also talks about OzSwoosh Academy's own defensive style of play: contain, contest control

  • Get to Know the Key Basketball Playing Roles and What is Expected
    2023/04/07

Basketball positions and playing roles in basketball are usually referred to as 1 through 5.

Now I share what each number represents and the role each position assumes.

Discussed are the traditional roles of the point guard, shooting guard, small (offensive) forward, power forward and the center.

Basketball has evolved over the course of the last few decades and skills have evolved along with it.

Today while most athletes are still categorized in a specific basketball playing role, versatility now means the positions an athlete may play are somewhat more blended.

Allocating roles to your players is an extremely important part of building accountability and helping players find their place in a team.

Defining playing roles around your expectations helps your athletes define themselves and helps them know what is expected.

  • Understand the Developmental Stages of Your Athletes
    2023/03/31

I thought we would examine the various developmental stages of athletes and the approaches a coach may apply when teaching various age groupings in basketball.

While approaches shared are based on age groups, I need to remind coaches people develop at different paces and age should only be a guide.

This episode I briefly outline the 5 key attributes we need to evolve and develop as human beings over the course of our lives.

Understanding these attributes helps us better recognize the important role coaches play not only in athletic development, but in human development as well.

I share my experience of working with players aged 4 to 25 and even older so you may consider the methods I have applied to different groups over the years as an example.

Thanks for joining me, I am Craig A. Rowe, the head coach at OzSwoosh Academy in Australia, I have over 30 years coaching experience including close to 2 decades of helping beginner coaches and teachers attain their club coach accreditation in Australia.

  • How to Maximize Learning with Small Sided Games in Basketball
    2023/03/23

Today I share with you the advantage of using Small Sided Games to maximize learning within your training session.

This approach in basketball helps athletes by improving decision making, skill acquisition, team play and reducing mental gaps with a method engaging, competitive and fun.

Usually, numbers are less than the usual 5 on 5 required in games, also the numbers may be adjusted to create advantage and disadvantage situations.

The focus is more on learning from failure, decision making, teamwork, communication and rule-based accountability.

When implementing rules in small sided games they help drive a certain outcome or behavior, sometimes without the athletes knowing the intention of the game.

Small Sided games help promote discoverability, versatility and adaptability.\

  • MAXIMIZE Athletic Performance with this Simple Coaching Hack
    2023/02/24

Self-Talk is something most of us engage in, it is the process of internally verbalizing actions and thoughts and can help maximize performance.

Here I explain what internal dialogue is and discuss both concepts of negative self-talk and positive self-talk. He talks about negative thoughts tied to cortisol which causes stress and adrenaline which causes fear and anxiety.

I will share how changing our internal dialogue from negative connotations to positive affirmations of realistic goals and reinforcements can improve rational thinking.

Positive self-talk works because it minimizes the activation of the fight and flight system, by calming and reinforcing key expectations to avoid disappointment.

I also offer some words which may help athletes improve their shooting and a bonus tip at the end of the video as always.
