Welcome to the Brand Obsessed Podcast

Bold thinking. Brilliant stories. Better sales.

Aren’t we all a little brand obsessed? Not just with the big names but with those businesses we see online that make it all look so easy!

I want to get under the bonnet of what creates a good brand and there are a million fantastic stories just waiting to be told.

On this podcast, I get to do one of the things I do best and that is chatting. It’s no accident that I ended up in a career in communications! One thing I‘m sure of though, is that better communications leads to better sales and you’ll see why it’s your best business strategy.

I'm Amanda Jane, a Sales Communications Strategist and founder of Big Brand Impact. Visit my website at bigbrandimpact.com for free resources, and come say hi on Instagram @AmandaJaneStrategist.

  • Episode 5: You know too much, that's the problem
    2026/10/09

Someone at a networking event asks, “So, what do you do?” You’ve done this job for fifteen years. You could talk about it for an hour. And somehow what comes out is… fog.

That’s the curse of knowledge. The better you are at what you do, the harder it is to explain it simply, because you’ve forgotten what it’s like not to know it. Every vague answer comes with a cost: the referral that never happens, the introduction that doesn’t land, the client who books someone less qualified but easier to understand. That’s the vague tax, and most experts pay it without noticing.

In this episode, I share the story of Sarah, a brilliant HR consultant who stood in front of exactly the right person and talked herself out of the opportunity. Then I show you how Sarah fixed it.

    In this episode:

    • Why expertise makes you worse at explaining what you do
    • The real cost of a vague answer, and why nobody tells you it cost you
    • How to swap jargon for outcomes your clients actually care about
    • The difficult questions you should be rehearsing before someone asks them
    • Why your one-liner isn’t finished until it’s been tested on real people

Sarah’s before: a polite, forgettable ramble.
Sarah’s after: “I help growing businesses keep their best people, so they stop paying to recruit the same role twice.”

Same expertise. Same Sarah. Completely different response.

If you’ve ever finished a conversation thinking that’s not what I meant to say, this one’s definitely for you.

Want your own version of Sarah’s line?
Book a one-hour Word Wardrobe Edit and leave with messaging you can say out loud with confidence. Or join The Activate Studio, where your brand starts selling, with weekly practice sessions so you can sharpen your pitch alongside other business owners until it’s second nature.

  • Episode 4: Why Your Brand Values Could Be Costing You Sales (Or Making Them)
    2026/08/14

"Integrity. Excellence. Passion." If your brand values could be pasted onto any competitor's website and nobody would notice, they're not values. They're just filler words.

In this episode, I examine what brand values are actually for, and why most businesses get them wrong.

    You’ll hear:

    • Why vague values don't just look weak, they actively cost you sales and consistency
    • The three-part test for whether something is a real value or just a nice sentence
    • What happens to trust when your team doesn't know what your business actually stands for
    • My own I-M-P-A-C-T values, Integrity, Meaningful Conversations, Purpose, Authenticity, Creativity, Together In Equality, and the real decisions, client relationships and team behaviours behind each one
    • Honest examples from my corporate career and from building Big Brand Impact, including moments where my values have lost me business

If you've ever written brand values because you felt like you were supposed to, this episode will change how you think about them completely.

By the end, you'll be asking yourself one question: would I ever actually say no to something, because of this?

  • Episode 3: Building Brands That Actually Mean Something With Jojo Smith
    2026/07/28
What if the most powerful thing you brought to your brand wasn't your strategy or your service, but your story? My very first guest for The Brand Obsessed Podcast just had to be, not your average brand expert, Jojo Smith!Jojo’s own story is a masterclass in understanding who you are before you try to tell anyone else who you are. The branding lessons that weave through our conversation are ones every founder needs to hear.About this week's guestJojo Smith is a brand and business development expert and founder of Creativsas. She has built her career across hospitality and retail before moving into brand development, and she brings a rare combination of lived experience, commercial acumen and radical self-awareness to everything she does. Jojo believes that the strongest brands aren't built on aesthetics. They're built on identity. And she has the framework, and the values acronym, to prove it.In this episodeMost brand conversations start with visuals. Logos. Colour palettes. The things that look like branding from the outside.Jojo starts somewhere entirely different. She starts with identity. With the question of who you actually are before you decide how you want the world to see you. And in this podcast, she traces that philosophy all the way back to her own story, a childhood in foster care that taught her more about resilience, self-knowledge and the importance of values than any boardroom ever could. This is a conversation about brand but it's also about something bigger. It's about what happens when the person building the brand finally understands themselves well enough to build something that lasts. What you'll hear in this episodeThe origin story that shaped everythingJojo talks openly about growing up in foster care and how that experience forged the self-awareness and values-driven approach that now sits front and centre of everything she does in her business. This is not background noise. It is the foundation. From hospitality to brand developmentHow a career across hospitality and retail gave Jojo an education in customer experience, brand consistency and what it actually means to deliver on a promise, long before she had the language to call it brand strategy. The three stages of brand buildingJojo walks through her practical framework for building a brand that works. Foundations, positioning and execution. In that order. Always in that order. And why skipping straight to execution is where most founders go wrong.Hiring for values, not just skillsWhat happens to a brand when the people inside it don't share its values, and how to make sure they do before you make the hire rather than after.Real AF: the values that run Creativsas Jojo shares the values framework she uses in her own business: Respect, Encouragement, Audacious, Loyal, Fair exchange. An acronym that is as memorable as it is meaningful and a masterclass in how values should feel, specific, ownable and impossible to confuse with anyone else's.Brand failures and what they have in commonThe pattern Jojo sees again and again in brands that lose their way. Spoiler: it almost always comes back to values. Not bad strategy. Not poor design. Values that were either never defined or never lived. The routines behind the clarityMusic, journaling and the practice of declaring goals intentionally. Jojo on the personal habits that keep her thinking clearly, showing up consistently and building with purpose. The strongest brands aren't built on aesthetics. They're built on identity. The question this episode will leave you withDo you know who you are clearly enough to build a brand around it? Or are you building the brand first and hoping the identity catches up?About your hostAmanda Jane is a Sales Communications Strategist and founder of Big Brand Impact with over twenty years of experience in communications, media and PR.
