  • Episode 15: Male Insecurity Unmasked
    2025/05/19

    Send us a text

When was the last time you admitted what makes you feel insecure? In this episode, Michael and Sameer rip away the façade of male bravado to explore what really makes men feel vulnerable in today's world.

The conversation begins with our typical take on current events—from the newly elected Pope to international conflicts—before diving into an unexpected analysis of reality television. As we dissect shows like Love Island, Naked Attraction, and Married at First Sight, a deeper theme emerges: how these programs might be fuelling our collective insecurities.

During Mental Health Awareness Week, the timing couldn't be better for another one of Michael's stats revealing that one in eight men suffer from anxiety or depression, with that number jumping to a staggering one in two among neurodivergent individuals.

We move on sharing some of our own personal insecurities—Sameer's baldness (which does have the unexpected benefit of providing early rain warnings) and Michael's troublesome knees that limit his physical capabilities.

Michael also reflects on his father's extraordinary entrepreneurial ventures at a young age, revealing how insecurity isn't just about physical appearance but extends to achievements and perceived opportunities. This generational comparison prompts a deeper discussion about the pressures modern men face.

By the end, we arrive at a 'profound conclusion', with one of Michael's best lines from the season so far: "When you die, you're not going to be remembered by your head or your knees." It's a funny reminder that while our insecurities feel all-consuming, they don't define us. What matters more is friendship, connection, and finding the courage to laugh at ourselves.

Listen now and perhaps discover the freedom that comes with acknowledging your own insecurities—whatever they might be.

  • Episode 14: Social Media Addiction & Screen Time: The Modern Pandemic?
    2025/04/28

    Send us a text

How much of your waking life is spent scrolling? Ever wondered what that's doing to your brain? We've all felt that urge to check our phones first thing in the morning and right before bed, but at what cost?

This week, we dive deep into the world of digital dependency, exploring how social media platforms are meticulously designed to keep us hooked through dopamine hits and what psychologists call "limbic resonance." The startling revelation that spending just three hours daily on social media significantly increases mental health risks had us questioning our own habits – especially since the average person spends 5-7 hours on their phone each day.

The pandemic transformed our relationship with screens, with opticians now reporting unprecedented vision problems in children. We tackle the uncomfortable question of whether tablets belong in classrooms and share a powerful thought: "When you want your child's childhood to end, give them a phone." Our honest conversation about parenting in the digital age explores the impossible balance between keeping children connected socially while protecting their development.

We also discuss the concept of digital detoxing – could you go a full week without your devices? The surprising anxiety this question triggers reveals just how dependent we've become. Between Michael's camping adventures (which aren't quite the digital detox he claims) and trying to limit our new found TikTok obsession, we offer practical insights on reclaiming control over your screen time.

Whether you're concerned about your own digital habits or trying to navigate parenting in an increasingly connected world, this one's for you! Give it a listen, and maybe consider putting your phone down afterward – even if just for an hour.

  • Episode 13: The Rise of Toxic Masculinity
    2025/04/14

    Send us a text

Have you noticed how different the world is for boys growing up today compared to your youth?

This week Michael and Sameer chat about the alarming rise of toxic masculinity among young men and how modern influences are reshaping male identity in troubling ways.

We unpack the BBC drama "Adolescence," using it as a springboard to examine how violence can manifest when young men feel marginalised. The shocking statistic that 67% of young men now feel compelled to display toxic or hyper masculinity demands our attention as parents, educators, and members of society.

What's particularly disturbing is how early these patterns begin. From the moment a toddler boy falls and is told to "man up", to the modern influence of social media where the hidden language of toxic masculinity proves especially concerning – coded emojis, "red pills," and references to "incel culture" are infiltrating primary schools, with children as young as ten being exposed to misogynistic ideologies. Unlike our generation who escaped bullying when the school day ended, today's youth face constant digital harassment that follows them everywhere.

So what's the solution? How do we raise young men to be confident without being toxic?

Join us this week as we navigate these complex questions and search for better ways to guide the next generation of men.

  • Episode 12: Burnout: The Silent Epidemic
    2025/03/17

    Send us a text

Burnout has reached epidemic proportions among men, yet most don't recognise it happening until they're completely depleted. Did you know one in three men can't identify their own burnout symptoms, and nearly all say "I'm fine" right before they crash?

In this week's conversation, we unpack the crucial differences between everyday stress and genuine burnout. While stress is our natural "the lion is coming, I need to run" response, burnout happens when that metaphorical lion has been in your room for a year with no escape! Through personal stories and practical advice, we break down the difference between normal stress and burnout while offering strategies to prevent reaching your breaking point:

    • Understanding the difference between stress (normal, short-term) and burnout (long-term exhaustion from extreme pressure)
    • Recognizing the three types of burnout symptoms: physical (tiredness, headaches), emotional (feeling isolated, withdrawn), and behavioral (being snappy, demotivated)
    • How poor workplace management and unreasonable expectations contribute significantly to burnout
    • Starting your day with the "3 Ms" – movement, mindfulness, and mindset – to build momentum and resilience
    • Creating small pockets of personal time throughout your day as "pressure release valves"
    • Finding activities that genuinely recharge you rather than following generic advice about relaxation

The physical, emotional, and behavioural symptoms of burnout often disguise themselves as separate issues, making them easy to dismiss, but for men between 35-45, this is especially relevant, as 96% reportedly experience burnout during these demanding years.

Whether you're feeling the weight of burnout yourself or concerned about someone close to you, we hope this episode offers both validation and some helpful practices to get you back to feeling your best!

  • Episode 10: Season Finale (Bad Advice)
    2024/12/09

    Send us a text

Has your best friend ever tried to convince you to get baptised at the age of 29, just so that you could be his best man?! We kick off our season finale with a hilarious throwback to when Michael asked Sameer to be his best man!

Join us as we look back at the wild, unpredictable journey that has become The Best Men Podcast. This week we explore the social intricacies within Indian and Greek communities, entertain the thought of replacing each other with a better guest host, and blend our humour with heartfelt gratitude as we reminisce about season one!

Given this week's theme is bad advice, we take a look at navigating the murky waters of public controversies with a deep dive into Gregg Wallace's recent PR nightmare. His alleged inappropriate behaviour towards women has sparked outrage, and we critically examine the impact of his actions and the questionable sincerity of his apologies. Unfiltered social media posts, bad advice and his apparent lack of PR guidance paint a picture of power unchecked, drawing parallels to other public figures who have similarly stumbled.

As we wrap up our first season, we look back at some of the worst advice we've been given and the quirkiest life lessons we've learned! We also reflect on what a wild ride making season one has been, and some of the best things we've taken away from The Best Men Podcast (so far!)

But most importantly, we express our thanks to you, our loyal listeners, for the laughter and support, and we promise more exciting content in the specials and upcoming seasons. Stay connected, keep striving for greatness, and remember, when life gets you down, be the BEST!
