  • How He Built a $20 Million Business From 2.5 Offices | Dan Fletcher
    2026/10/02

Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note.

Dan Fletcher went from a park bench to Park Avenue. The CEO of Sound Hearing, Beltone reveals how he got clean at the Salvation Army, bought out the owners who refused to sell to him, and built a $20 million company with 54 Beltone franchise offices.

HIs company has 89 employees and 54 offices across Michigan and northern Ohio, and has won every award Beltone offers, including six straight Circle of Excellence awards and recognition as one of Detroit's top places to work, earned across a network of 1,600 offices nationwide.

    He explains:

🡒 The Park Bench Turnaround: how hitting rock bottom at a Salvation Army recovery program became the foundation for everything he built afterward.

🡒 The 1,200 Unit Deal: the exact pitch he made to owners who told him the business would never be for sale, and how it made him a partner within one year.

🡒 The Lucky Question: the scale of 1 to 10 interview question that exposes a bad hire before they poison your entire team.

🡒 The Trust Sale: why nobody has ever actually bought a hearing aid from him, and what his patients are really paying for.

🡒 The 5% Edge: why success never required anything astronomical, just slightly more effort than everyone else is willing to give.

  • Nobody Sees The Work Behind Success | Ben Bosscher
    2026/09/18

Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note.

Ben Bosscher hosts a three hour sports radio show five days a week on 100.9 The Mitt.

    He's 24.

When the station gave him a test run, he replaced the time slot of Dan Patrick, who’d been on the air longer than Ben had been alive. There was no hiding his age - his vocabulary and experience both weren’t there yet.

So he leaned on the one thing he could control. Preparation.

    What we covered:

→ How he preps a three hour show every single day

→ Getting his own show at 24 and why he says he earned it

→ Where sports talk radio goes after the hot take era

→ Sports gambling, promo codes at 21, and his lock of the day

→ His advice for anyone who feels behind their friends

Thanks for coming on, Ben. Catch him Monday through Friday, 9 to noon EST, on 100.9 The Mitt.

  • I Hired Before I Could Afford It | Bill Cowdin
    2026/09/11

Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note.

Bill Cowdin started Cowdin Design and Build in October 2008, the worst possible month of the worst possible year to launch a construction business.

And for a while, he was the whole company… Building kitchen islands in his garage, hauling sheets of wood in the back of a Suburban, and working 100 hours a week with an office in his spare bedroom.

The turn came when he stopped asking whether he could afford the next hire and started asking whether he could afford not to make it. He took the leap, paid his people before he paid himself, and made it work.

Today he runs a team with systems built to handle 35 to 40 percent more work than they have, and he doesn't touch day to day operations at all.

    What we covered:

→ Doing every job in the company yourself, and recognizing when that stops being a badge of honor

→ Hiring before you can afford it, and paying your people before you pay yourself

→ Letting go of good people the business outgrew, and why owners wait too long

→ The client happiness chart, and why everyone bottoms out at drywall

→ Four ten hour days, quiet Fridays, and the Tuesday at 2:00 standing meeting

→ The discovery flight that led to his own Bonanza, and the flight with his dad that never happened

Most owners stay buried in the work because writing that first real paycheck to someone else feels impossible.

  • It’s Never The Right Time To Start A Business… Start Anyway | Lynn Coburn and Jessica Klug
    2026/09/08

Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note.

Sixteen years ago, Lynn Coburn and her husband walked away from 25 years of corporate stability to buy a staffing franchise. They got the news that Lynn's dad had a heart attack minutes before signing the papers. They signed anyway.

Today they own two Express Employment Professionals territories in Michigan and lead a team of 14. Their daughter Jessica, a ninth grader when they took the leap, now runs operations.

They work 60 hours a week, but it's 60 hours of what they love. They travel more than they ever did on a corporate salary, and the team they've built is loyal enough that when Lynn threw out the policy handbook to carry an employee through a crisis, that person stayed for good.

    What we covered:

→ Why there is never a right time to start a business

→ Hiring to your weakness, not your strength

→ Recruiting the 90 percent who already have jobs, and finding the real pain point

→ The volunteer day at Gleaners that changed how Lynn leads

→ Throwing out the policy handbook when a team member's world crashed

  • Is Your Business Worthless Without You? | Robert Young & Doug Cellini
    2026/08/28

Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note.

Is your business actually worth what you think it is?

Many owners think their business is worth a lot of money - they often guess too high because of the love for their work. But in reality, if your business can’t run three months without you driving, it’s definitely worth less than you think.

This week on The 1% Podcast, we covered:

→ Why cash flow, not investment returns, decides most people's financial outcome

→ The handshake buy sell agreement that can cost a family half a business

→ Why most business owners don't actually know what their company is worth

→ The habits we see over and over in multi millionaire clients

→ Whether you should pay off your mortgage before you retire

A good business should be able to work well even when the owner is away. You should have an expert check the value every few years. That way, you know what someone will really pay for it.

01:14 Why Chasing Stock Returns Misses the Point

    04:50 Risk Management Beyond Investments
