Frankenstein Castle is famous as the place that inspired Mary Shelley's novel. Her boat stopped ten miles away in 1814 — and there is no mention of the castle in her journals, no castle of any kind in the novel, and no evidence she ever climbed the hill. The link was proposed by a historian in 1975 and sold by a paperback in 1999.

Strip the monster away and something better is standing underneath: a real thirteenth-century knights' castle, a family who held it for four hundred years, and the rare distinction of never once falling to an enemy — before its own neighbours quarried it away for building stone.

Everyone who visits Heidelberg Castle asks the same question: why was it never rebuilt? The usual answer is the French — Louis XIV's armies burned it in 1689 and mined the powder tower in 1693. That's true, and it isn't why the castle is still a ruin today. Two hundred years later Germany had the money, the drawings and the Emperor's own backing to put it back, and spent five years arguing in public about whether it should. The side that won said no — and the principle they won with, "conserve, do not restore," is why ruins across the world are still ruins.

Everything written about this castle reaches for the same word: untouched. It's mostly true — and it leaves out the most interesting thing that ever happened here. In 1331 an archbishop built a second castle on the ridge next door and bombarded this one for five years with some of the earliest cannon ever used north of the Alps.

Eltz held — and then surrendered, on terms. This is the real story of Eltz Castle: a fortress shaped not by one architect but by an inheritance contract between three feuding brothers who chose to share one rock; a family that climbed back through the Church after losing its war; and a nineteenth-century count who restored the place by refusing to invent a single thing that hadn't stood there before. Eight hundred and fifty years, thirty-four generations, one family — and the only castle in Germany that never had to fake being medieval.
