On 30 November 1870, Ludwig II of Bavaria, the king who built Linderhof Palace, lay in bed with toothache and copied out a letter he had not written. Bismarck had drafted it. It asked the King of Prussia to take the title of German Emperor. Seven weeks later the Empire was proclaimed in the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles, and Ludwig II was not in the room. Within the year, money from Bismarck's secret Guelph Fund was reaching him.
This is an episode about Linderhof Palace in the Bavarian Alps, the only palace Ludwig II lived to see finished, and about what he built in the same years he signed away his kingdom's independence: a Hall of Mirrors of his own (modelled on Munich, not Versailles), a bronze Louis XIV in the entrance hall, a dining table that sinks to the kitchen so no servant need see him eat, and an electrically lit Venus Grotto for an audience of one. And about Count Holnstein, the man who carried the letter, handled the money, and came back in 1886 for the king who had signed.
A kingdom of one.
