  • WE'RE BACK! Victims Matter Rally Recap
    2024/03/26

WE'RE BACK!!! In this new season of Stepping Toward Justice (@step2justice) Host Sarah A. Ford (@sarahafordesq) and Producer Zeke Stephenson (@zekestephenson) take a deep dive into last week's Victims Matter Rally that was hosted by SCVAN and SCADVASSA and took place on the front steps of the South Carolina State House. We chat about the Bowen Turner case being back in the news and where we’ve been these past few months.

We are grateful to the Luna Shark team for providing the video of the rally.

As we discussed in the episode, we are looking at a significant cut to the VOCA funds that many of us rely on to serve victims. We need to advocate that the legislature provides the SC Attorney General with additional funds so that victim services providers don’t face devastating cuts that will ultimately hurt victims.

Please click this link https://secure.madd.org/page/64675/action/1 and add your voice to ours. How often has a victim said to you, "I could not have done this without you?" If we lose our VOCA funding, many victims will have to walk their paths alone. We can't allow that.

  • Stepping Toward Justice with Sarah A. Ford Ep. 4: Amanda Brown Forensic Nurse Examiner
    2023/05/10

Our next guest is Amanda Brown. She is the Statewide Forensic Nurse Examiner Coordinator in SC, which you may more commonly know as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner. An FNE or SANE is a registered nurse trained in treating victims, making that patient feel comfortable and safe, and collects forensic samples that will go into evidence for possible future prosecution. If you thought this was a fast and simple process, think again! Listen as Amanda goes into detail about the process, and the impacts the lack of forensic nurse training has on both the healthcare system as well as victims.
