    THE LEGEND OF BALD MOUNTAIN

A great peak of stone, breathing with the wind and piercing the clouds. If this ancient Bald Mountain (Łysa Góra) were at last to speak with a human voice, what would it say? If nature herself were given tongue, the tale of the mountain that hath borne many names would reveal a truth older than the spoken word.

Did the hard rocks of the summit truly never bear a forest? How did the early Slavs bring fire unto this place and raise mighty walls of stone? 'Twas here that Perun himself, wise Svetovit, and Rod received their worship, when the folk sang hymns unto the gods with grand reverence. Alas, as centuries passed, times did change. Monks trod cautiously upon the peak, and the primeval Bald Mountain became the Holy Cross, whilst earnest pagan rites were cast into the dark.

Hearken whence the famed witches' sabbath came to be. The mountain spirit speaketh plainly: the summit never saw a witch, for 'twas but human dread that birthed such fables. The true secrets dwell only within the ancient circles and the silent fields of naked stone. 'Tis old fears that beguile our eyes, making us seek darkness where there is none. Such is the tale one may hear upon the whisper of the wind along the Świętokrzyskie trails.

00:00 Of a mountain older than human memory
00:32 How the mountain arose from earth and stone
01:12 Of the first guidepost in the wildwood
01:38 How the Slavs worshipped their gods here
03:15 Of the monks' arrival and the giving of a new name
04:19 The whole truth of witches and sabbaths
05:18 Of the three names and the mountain's truth

    THE LEGEND OF LIKHO

In the dark pine woods, where the sun but faintly glimmered through the oak leaves, evil in its purest form once lurked. Know then the dreadful Slavic likho, the ancient demon of misfortune, of whom we shall speak to thee this day.

Dost thou ever ponder wherefore we say: "Likho taketh not the wicked"? Behold this lean, one-eyed beast, that most gladly waylaid wanderers at the crossroads. Listen how this demon of misfortune stood in the path of the young smith Sambor, shrouding his bright future in a dense fog. The youth, full of dread for his workshop and his love for a fair maiden, resolved to challenge the monster.

Discover the stratagem the wise peasant employed, leading the phantom unto his forge. How came it to pass that a cracked anvil saved his soul? THE LEGEND OF DOZHINKI

The scent of mown grain drifteth across the fields, and the great toil draweth to a close. Thus the true harvest festival beginneth, which our ancient forebears called Dozhinki, Wyzhinki, Okrezhne, or Obrzynki. Come with us into the very midst of great autumnal joy, where ancient rites and Slavic traditions are quickened anew.

Learn wherefore a tuft of unreaped ears was ever left in the very midst of the field. 'Twas there the Polevik took refuge. A mighty guardian spirit, whom it was in no wise wise for the peasants to provoke. Know the secret of the final sheaf, which guarded the power of future harvests through the fierce winter, safely hidden within the barn. Behold from what herbs and grains the clever women wove the colorful harvest wreath, making of it a gift for the bountiful earth.

The Slavic Dozhinki were a time of great unity. Without divisions betwixt the rich and the poor, when all together shared the fragrant kolach of the new grain. Listen how, amidst boisterous songs, drums, and fire, the olden circle of life was brought to a close, bestowing hope for survival until the spring. This is a tale that breatheth faith in the magic of nature and shieldeth ancient beliefs from oblivion.

00:00 Of the ancient harvest festival, which they called wyzhinki
00:33 How the sun set, and the final sheaf was reaped
01:21 Of the tuft of ears for the Polevik
02:15 How the joyous tidings and the colorful procession set forth
03:17 Of giving thanks unto the gods and the gift for the eldest
