THE LEGEND OF DOZHINKI
The scent of mown grain drifteth across the fields, and the great toil draweth to a close. Thus the true harvest festival beginneth, which our ancient forebears called Dozhinki, Wyzhinki, Okrezhne, or Obrzynki. Come with us into the very midst of great autumnal joy, where ancient rites and Slavic traditions are quickened anew.
Learn wherefore a tuft of unreaped ears was ever left in the very midst of the field. 'Twas there the Polevik took refuge. A mighty guardian spirit, whom it was in no wise wise for the peasants to provoke. Know the secret of the final sheaf, which guarded the power of future harvests through the fierce winter, safely hidden within the barn. Behold from what herbs and grains the clever women wove the colorful harvest wreath, making of it a gift for the bountiful earth.
The Slavic Dozhinki were a time of great unity. Without divisions betwixt the rich and the poor, when all together shared the fragrant kolach of the new grain. Listen how, amidst boisterous songs, drums, and fire, the olden circle of life was brought to a close, bestowing hope for survival until the spring. This is a tale that breatheth faith in the magic of nature and shieldeth ancient beliefs from oblivion.
