The 1830 Indian Removal Act required that the Cherokee Nation surrender ancestral lands and move west. In 1838, more than 16,000 Cherokee Nation citizens began their trek west from their traditional eastern homeland to Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma) along the Trail of Tears. They traveled by existing roads and rivers. Many groups left in the fall, hoping to avoid the disease and heat of summer travel, only to face treacherous winter weather.

Tsa-La-Gi Trail, of course, is part of the Trail of Tears that I talked about in a previous episode. Something I've been thinking about for a long time, you know, every time I'm driving along, because sometimes it's actually on the roads, you know, the trails become roads and such.

Have you ever heard of the Trail of Tears? I've mentioned it a few times on the show, mainly because I see signs for it all around here. And the phrase is popular in the media. There are two state parks, a band, 3 albums, and 8 songs titled "Trail of Tears". Apparently, this part of the country was right in its path. But I never really knew exactly what it was about, except vaguely that it had something to do with displacing Indians from their land. Well, I finally dug in and found some answers about the Trail of Tears, and I'm going to give you as much as I can today, though it will probably not be all you need to know.
