But before he would take the job, he had one condition: America would be independent. The Whigs were back in charge with a decade's worth of reforms ready to go. But would Rockingham's second act be the start of a new Whig era, or just a brief interruption?

After a period of relative peace in the colonies, the dominoes falling to revolution started not in Boston, but in India, where British mismanagement led to famine and ruin, with economic ripples around the empire. Seeking to prevent a disaster, Lord North's Tea Act gave the East India Company a monopoly... and the American colonists a target to strike. It was time to throw a tea party.

As Grafton’s government collapsed, Lord North became the last "adult in the room". He lacked the charisma and wealth of his predecessors, but somehow held Britain’s government together better than anyone expected. He navigated crisis after crisis, even winning Chatham's grudging praise: "This tenure seems to be a good one."

Shame about all that tea in Boston Harbor.

By 1770, Boston was a city under siege. British Redcoats patrolled the streets while patriot groups like the Sons of Liberty fought a shadow war against British taxation.
