Today, Pastor Todd continues the 1Thessalonians sermon series as we take a look at chapter 5, verses 1-11. The title of today's sermon is "Life a Thief in the Night."

When a thief comes in the night, it is always unexpected and it comes as a great shock. Similarly, when Jesus returns, it will be unexpected to those people who are not truly following Jesus. However, true believers expect the return of Jesus, and for the true believer/follower of Christ, this will be a day of great joy!

The Christian life begins with a step of faith, but it is not just one step. That initial step must lead to a walk of faith.

As we look at today’s text, 1 Thessalonians 3:1-13, we are not simply reading a letter. Instead, we are seeing a picture of a pastor who loves the people that God had given him. As we think of what has occurred to this point, remember that Paul had led these people to Jesus, but we know from the book of Acts that Paul was forced to leave Thessalonica after just being there for a short time. Paul was being persecuted there.

Paul did not have an easy way to check on them, and he was burdened for these people. So he sent Timothy to check on them. When Paul received Timothy’s report that the Thessalonians were standing strong, Paul rejoiced. However, Paul continued to pray for these people.

The title of today’s sermon is “Will You Stand?” When trials, temptations and persecution comes, will you stand on God’s Word?

God’s Word is so much words than simply words on a page. God’s Word is inspired and inerrant and it is to be at work in those who believe. Paul reminds us that the gospel is what changes lives, even in the face of hardship.

This passage also gives us a glimpse into the heart of a shepherd. We see Paul’s love for the Thessalonians, his willingness to suffer for the sake of the gospel, and his joy in seeing them walk with Christ.
