If you got to the back end of last week and yet again, for what felt like the 457th week in a row, you hadn't achieved everything you wanted to achieved... then you probably finished the week frustrated. Again.

The thing is you're not alone in this. Most business owners, and especially MSPs, feel that frustration, because there never seems to be quite enough time to do all the things you want to do.

Sometimes I speak to members and they are highly emotional about where they're at with their business.

And that's understandable. I've been a business owner for 20 years myself, and I do understand that it's everything to us in a way.

But sometimes when we look at what other people are doing and compare it to our own progress, we're just making our life unintentionally harder. We're comparing apples with oranges.

It's the same as comparing your life to what you're seeing your friends post on Facebook and Instagram. The reality is you're not seeing an accurate snapshot of what's REALLY happening in their lives.

Building a business is a slog, right? There's always something that needs to be fixed or changed or improved.

And when you're taking the business in new directions, what makes it harder is there's no roadmap to follow. The first time you do something is always the hardest.

And that means you make mistakes. You go down wrong paths. I don't actually see this as a bad thing. In fact I believe you have to go down the wrong paths to discover which the right path is.

Tell me... how often do you stop and look back at what you've achieved and give yourself a congratulatory slap on the back?

Probably not very often. And yet I think as busy business owners we should do this on a regular basis.

Because it's far too easy to live in the problems of today, rather than look at our business through the eyes of the person we used to be when we started it.

That person would be really proud of what you've achieved... don't you think?

As the owner and leader of the business, we are the Mom or Dad to our staff.

Yes I really believe this! And I don't mean in that we have to tell them what to do all the time. That's not what good parenting is.

Good parenting is nurturing and leading and I see a lot of parallels between someone growing a team and someone being a parent (especially if you have teenagers).

And the even better news is: you don't have to be perfect but you DO have to be consistent. That counts as both the leader and the parent.

We're talking retention today, and especially why clients leave your MSP. Yes, I know just the thought of this strikes fear into your very soul.

But it's important we discuss it. Because clients rarely (if ever) leave just because of something like your prices going up. There's a much bigger reason they are more likely to switch to another MSP.

And the good news is, it's an emotional reason. Which means you can head it off long before it does any damage to your relationship with them.
