This week on Paths to Glory, we replay one of the most impactful stories we have ever brought to this podcast — an episode from Season 4 called Bonus Time.

It is the story of a little girl who answered the door when two strangers came knocking, asking if any of the kids in the house wanted to come to church. It is the story of the twelve-year-old who was filled with the Holy Ghost on an ordinary Wednesday night, and baptized in the name of Jesus Christ on her thirteenth birthday, with no parents watching and no photos taken. It is the story of the woman that little girl became — a high achiever with a master's degree and a hidden seventeen-year addiction almost nobody around her ever knew about. It is the story of a brother who rode that same church bus, and of the two very different ways their lives ended up.

And it is the story of one Sunday morning at an altar when everything — quietly, finally, completely — broke.

Some prayers are quiet. Some are broad. Some are the sort any of us might pray on any given Sunday. This one was none of those.

This week on Paths to Glory, we sit with a woman who prayed a single specific request from a hospital bed at twenty-one years old — and has spent the last twenty-five years watching God answer it in front of her family, in front of her husband, and in front of every last person who had ever known her before she was the kind of woman who prayed anything at all.

Raised Catholic in a broken home. A mother in field labor. A little brother she began raising when she was still a child. A marriage at nineteen to a drug-dealing husband who came faithfully to every service she attended, but would not surrender. A brother lost to heroin after a childhood prescription ran out. Groceries that appeared on a porch in answer to a promise she had barely learned to read. A pastor she had never met making a U-turn out of freeway traffic to come and find her.

This is the story of a young mother who asked the Lord for one specific thing that only He could give — and of a family whose story has been rewritten so completely that she and her husband still sit on the porch some evenings and remind each other, babe — we're here.

This week on Paths to Glory, we sit with a young woman who was baptized in the name of Jesus Christ before she could tie her own shoes, and received the Holy Ghost when she was five years old. She did not need to be rescued from the streets. She did not need to be rescued from a jail cell. She needed to be rescued from something the world was never going to see — a slow bleeding on the inside of a life that looked, from every angle out there, exactly the way a Pentecostal life is supposed to look.

Her father was a lay minister who prayed people through to the Holy Ghost — until he wasn't. Her mother was a woman of quiet, unshakable prayer who never spoke a word against him. And the daughter in between them carried, for years, a bitterness so heavy she still uses the word hatred to describe it.

This is the story of what a sermon she cannot remember started in her, what a pastor's wife's single sentence finished, what a very specific prayer received a very specific answer to within fifteen minutes, and what a house fire two weeks before her wedding taught her about the family of God.

And, in the end, of a childhood memory about a light that could finally be turned off — because the room had never actually been empty.
