Some testimonies are about one search. This one is about two.
This week on Paths to Glory, we replay an episode from Season 3 — a story that has quietly become one of the ones our listeners return to more than almost any other.
It is the testimony of a little boy born on a Hawaiian island and given up for adoption almost as soon as he arrived. Raised in the islands by a Puerto Rican father and a part-Apache mother, he grew up loved — and grew up with two questions he could not stop asking. Who was he? And where had he come from?
The search that would eventually take him through ancestry records, court petitions, and a phone call that opened forty years of silence — that search would not begin until much later. Long before it did, a very different chapter unfolded. A Navy uniform. A ship at sea. Two arrests in the space of two weeks. A Bible handed to him by a shipmate whose name he barely remembers. And a series of encounters he did not go looking for — a preacher in a shopping mall, a cleaning lady who prayed over his bed, and a dimly lit room on a warship where the presence of God overwhelmed him so completely he fled it.
He came back.
And what happened after he came back — on that same ship, in the years that followed, in the church he now pastors — is why we felt led to bring this testimony back today.
Two searches. One answer. Not in the order any of us would have written it.
