EPISODE 5, It's Not What You Said, It's How You Said It

She had spent hours cleaning the house, top to bottom. Then she walked into the bedroom and found his clothes flung everywhere. What she said next is what brought them to my office, and it had nothing to do with the clothes.

Welcome to Nobody Told Me Love Isn't Enough. I'm Anita Daniels, marriage counsellor, author, and founder of She Really Heals. This week, I'm asking why two people who want exactly the same thing can still end up in an argument, and what changes when the same request is said a different way.

We open with a message from Michael and Temmy, who agree on almost everything and still can't say it to each other without it turning into something else. Then I tell you about Mr and Mrs G, and the one sentence that made him defend himself instead of listen. When I asked Mr G what he would have done if she had said it differently, his answer says everything.

We also name the four patterns that show up in almost every conversation that goes wrong: criticism, defensiveness, contempt, and stonewalling, with the exact lines to listen for in your own home. I touch on gaslighting too, which needs an episode of its own, coming soon. And I'll give you a bus stop analogy that may change how you think about blaming your partner for how you react.

Whoever you are, engaged, married, single, or healing from something, and especially if you're listening from our African, Caribbean, or Asian communities, this one's for you.

Send me a voice note or message, WhatsApp 07513 443176, or email info@shereallyheals.com. I read them all, and some of you might hear yours back on a future episode.

My book, Love Isn't Enough, is on Amazon now, audiobook on Spotify. And our free app, Ready and Staying, walks you and your partner through these exact conversations at your own pace. Everything's at shereallyheals.com.

You can be right, and still say it in a way that makes you impossible to hear.

  • More than Money
    2026/09/29

He gave her everything: a home, a car and a business of her own. Then he lost his job, and for two years she treated him like a stranger. The day after he got hired again, she handed him money for a new suit.

Welcome to Nobody Told Me Love Isn't Enough. I'm Anita Daniels, marriage counsellor, author, and founder of She Really Heals. In this episode, I'm asking the question so many couples never say out loud: Is providing the same thing as loving?

We talk about the men, Afro-Caribbean men especially, raised with one job description for what a husband is, provided, and never taught the rest. We talk about the women raised to measure a man entirely by his pay cheque, and what happens to a marriage when that pay cheque disappears, even briefly, even through no fault of his own. I'll tell you about the man who lost everything for two years and was only welcomed back once he was useful again, and about the husband whose wife wanted equal partnership from a friend's marriage while quietly keeping her own money her own, and his money theirs.

Whoever you are, providing, provided for, or somewhere figuring out what fair actually looks like in your own home, this one's for you.

Send me a voice note or message, WhatsApp 07513 443176, or email info@shereallyheals.com, I read them all, and some of you might hear yours back on a future episode.

When two become one, the vow should actually mean that.

  • Episode 3-Attachment Styles
    2026/09/22

Every couple has a pattern they keep repeating, and it usually started long before they ever met.

In this episode, marriage counsellor Anita Daniels breaks down attachment theory, secure, anxious, avoidant, and disorganised attachment, and why the way you were loved as a child is quietly running your relationship right now. Not as a life sentence, but as something you can finally see clearly enough to change.

Anita shares the story of a couple caught in one of the most common and painful cycles in marriage, one partner reaching for closeness, the other pulling away, both of them exhausted, both of them further apart by the time it's over. And the four words that finally changed everything for them.

Plus, two listener messages open the show this week. Ms A tells us what happened when she and her partner finally took the love languages assessment, and discovered they'd both been wrong about themselves. And Mrs O writes in with something most couples never find the words for, a partner who runs, not out of the house, but out of the conversation, the moment things get hard.

Whether you're engaged, married, single, or healing from something, this episode gives you the language for a pattern you've probably lived inside without ever naming it.

You planned the wedding. Now prepare for the marriage.

  • Your Love Language
    2026/09/15

EPISODE 2 — Your Love Language Is Not Theirs, And That Is Why You Both Feel Unloved

You can love someone completely, and they can still feel unloved. Not because you're failing them. Because you're speaking a language they can't hear.

In this episode, marriage counsellor Anita Daniels breaks down Dr Gary Chapman's five love languages, Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Receiving Gifts, Quality Time, and Physical Touch, and why most of us give love in our own language and just assume our partner receives it the same way. They don't.

Plus, two real stories from the counselling room. Remi and Bola, whose carefully planned three-week anniversary dinner nearly broke a marriage that was full of real love, and Kemi and Tunde, and the mystery of the man who cannot stop fixing things in the garage.

And at the top of the show, we read our first listener message, from a man we're calling Mr G, on one of the hardest, least talked about parts of intimacy in marriage.

  • Love isn't enough: And nobody told you this at the wedding
    2026/09/12

EPISODE 1 — Love Is Not Enough, And Nobody Told You That At The Wedding

A woman sat across from me. Twelve years married. Big house, a driver, a husband who had given her everything money could buy. And she told me she had never once felt lonelier than she did in her own marriage.

By the end of this episode, you'll hear exactly what she said next, the sentence that changed how I counsel every couple who walks into my room.

Welcome to Nobody Told Me Love Isn't Enough. I'm Anita Daniels, marriage counsellor, author, and founder of She Really Heals, and I've been married for thirty-three years. In this first episode, I'm asking the question nobody asks you before the wedding: what does love actually require of you?

We talk about why the feeling that gets you to the altar was never enough to carry you through it. Why most of us spend months planning a wedding and no time at all preparing for the marriage. And I'll tell you about Michael and Grace, married three years, both trying, both exhausted, who'd never once compared what love actually meant to each of them, and Priya and Jai, whose Sunday afternoon argument over a football match says more about how we love than either of them realised.

Whoever you are, engaged, married, single, or healing from something, and especially if you're listening from our African, Caribbean, or Asian communities, this one's for you.

You planned the wedding. Now prepare for the marriage. Still married. Still preparing. That's not a failure; that's the whole point.

GOT A TOPIC OR A QUESTION?

This podcast only works if it's actually answering what's on your mind, not just what I think should come next. If there's a topic we haven't covered yet, something you've always wondered about, or a situation in your own relationship you'd love a counsellor's perspective on, send it my way. You can stay anonymous if you'd rather, just say so in your message. Some of the best episodes of this show are going to come directly from what you ask me, so don't hold back.
