    If you walk into the Roman Forum today, on any given morning of any given month, and stand at the eastern end where the Via Sacra rises out of the ancient market square toward the Palatine Hill, you will see a single small triumphal arch. Built around eighty-one A.D. by the Emperor Domitian to commemorate his brother Titus. On its inner south panel, carved in stone still visible after nineteen centuries, is a procession of Roman legionaries carrying a menorah, a table of showbread, and a set of silver trumpets away from Jerusalem.

    That is the Second Temple, being carried into Rome, on the shoulders of the soldiers who burned it.

    Episode Eight walks the sixty years after the Temple came down. Not the war itself — that is behind us. This is what came out of it.

Jewish War Book seven, chapter eight. He is describing the last hours before dawn on what he tells us was the fifteenth day of the Jewish month of Xanthicus, in the year we now call 73 AD. The place was the mountain fortress of Masada, on the western shore of the Dead Sea. The people were the last organised resistance to Rome in the Jewish War. Nine hundred and sixty men, women, and children.In the last hours of that night, according to Josephus, they killed each other. The Roman assault troops broke through the walls at dawn, expecting a battle. They walked into a fortress full of bodies.This is the war's epilogue. The Temple has fallen. The city has fallen.     August, 70 AD. The day the world changed. The Second Temple — the beating heart of ancient Judaism, the building Christ Himself had stood inside and warned would not have one stone left upon another — burned to the ground in a fire the Romans, according to their own commanding general, did not order. Episode Six walks the last month of the Temple in careful detail, with Josephus, Tacitus, Sulpicius Severus, and the two communities that walked out of the ashes.”Now, as soon as the army had no more people to slay or to plunder… Caesar gave orders that they should now demolish the entire city and temple.”That was Josephus. Jewish War, Book Six. Written in Rome sometime in the seventies AD, paid for by the Emperor Vespasian, published under the imperial seal. Josephus was in the Roman camp when Jerusalem fell. He watched it fall. His mother was inside the walls. His brother was inside the walls. His childhood friends were inside the walls. The city he had grown up in, the Temple he had served in as a young priest, the streets he had walked as a boy — being systematically taken apart stone by stone by the army he was travelling with.He watched it, and he wrote it down. What he wrote down is one of the most extraordinary eyewitness accounts of a national catastrophe anywhere in classical literature. He does not spare us. He does not soften it.     In the spring of 66 AD, in the port city of Caesarea, a Greek man walked up to the entrance of the local synagogue with an upside-down chamber pot. He set it down in front of the door. On top of it, he sacrificed several birds.

    It was the Sabbath.

    That single act of deliberate desecration — combined with a Roman procurator too corrupt to intervene, a Temple treasury raided in broad daylight, and a comedian's joke about "poor Florus" that led to three thousand six hundred dead in the streets of Jerusalem — lit the fuse on the war that would end the Second Temple.

    Episode 3 walks through the spring and summer of 66 AD — from the Caesarea synagogue desecration to the humiliating defeat of a Roman legion in a narrow pass called Beth-Horon.

    One man walked out of a burning Jerusalem alive. A million others didn't.

    In the autumn of 70 AD, the Romans destroyed the Second Temple and burned the holy city to the ground. Only one eyewitness account of that fall survives. It was written by a Jewish priest from Jerusalem who, somehow, ended up sitting inside the Roman general's tent — taking notes while his city burned. His name was Josephus.

    This is Episode 1 of The Fall of Jerusalem: Josephus and the End of the World — the first season of Mrs O Investigates. We begin where every honest investigation has to: with the man himself.
