One man walked out of a burning Jerusalem alive. A million others didn't.

In the autumn of 70 AD, the Romans destroyed the Second Temple and burned the holy city to the ground. Only one eyewitness account of that fall survives. It was written by a Jewish priest from Jerusalem who, somehow, ended up sitting inside the Roman general's tent — taking notes while his city burned. His name was Josephus.

This is Episode 1 of The Fall of Jerusalem: Josephus and the End of the World — the first season of Mrs O Investigates. We begin where every honest investigation has to: with the man himself.

In this episode:
- The cold open — Josephus's own account of the Temple's destruction, read from Jewish War Book 6
- The Hasmonean priestly family Josephus was born into in 37 AD
- His teenage spiritual boot camp through the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Essenes
- Three years in the Judean wilderness with a hermit named Banus
- The death of James, the brother of Jesus, at the hands of a Sadducee high priest — recorded by Josephus himself in 62 AD
- His voyage to Rome in 63 AD, his shipwreck, and his audience with Emperor Nero's wife
- Why this two-thousand-year-old story is reading like today's headlines — Temple Institute preparations, red heifers from Texas, Iran-Israel tensions, and the KJV prophecies that assume a functioning Temple

Primary sources: Josephus, The Jewish War (Whiston translation); Josephus, The Life of Josephus; Josephus, Antiquities of the Jews Book 20; Acts 24 KJV; Matthew 22 KJV; Matthew 24 KJV; Tacitus, Annals Book 15.
