In 63 BC, a Roman general named Pompey walked into the Holy of Holies — the most sacred room in the Jewish world. He didn't loot. He didn't desecrate the altar. But the door had been opened. The fence around the Holy of Holies had been kicked over. Jewish independence was finished.
Episode 2 walks the long road from that moment to the world Jesus was born into. From Pompey in 63 BC to the Roman procurators of the first century, the five Jewish factions that would tear the country apart, the false messiahs Jesus warned us about, the historian who described John the Baptist in his own words — and the modern-day movements that have inherited every faction's energy and are running it back, this time in our newsfeeds.
In this episode:
- Cold open — Pompey enters the Holy of Holies (Josephus, Antiquities 14.4)
- The Hasmonean civil war that opened the door to Rome
- The five Roman procurators who matter for this series — Pilate, Felix, Festus, Albinus, Florus
- The death of James the brother of Jesus (Josephus, Antiquities 20.9.1) — and the Sadducee high priest who killed him in a three-week gap in Roman oversight
- The five Jewish factions — Pharisees, Sadducees, Essenes, Zealots, Sicarii — and the descendants of each you'll recognise in 2026
- Josephus on John the Baptist (Antiquities 18.5.2) — the wise teacher of virtue Herod feared
- The Testimonium Flavianum (Antiquities 18.3.3) — Josephus on Jesus himself, in both the medieval and Arabic versions
- Theudas (around 44 AD) and the Egyptian (around 56 AD) — two false prophets Josephus catalogued, both also named in Acts (Acts 5:36, Acts 21:38)
- The 2025 #RaptureTok episode — the Joshua Mhlakela September 23-24 prediction, and the unbroken line that runs back through William Miller, Edgar Whisenant, Harold Camping
- The Third Temple movement today — the Temple Institute, the red heifers from Texas, the priestly garments, the altar
- How Theodor Herzl (1860-1904) and C.I. Scofield (1843-1921) — a secular Jewish journalist and an American minister — built, without ever meeting, the alliance that shaped twentieth-century geopolitics
- The 9th of Av — same date, Babylon and Rome, six hundred and fifty-six years apart
