In the spring of 66 AD, in the port city of Caesarea, a Greek man walked up to the entrance of the local synagogue with an upside-down chamber pot. He set it down in front of the door. On top of it, he sacrificed several birds.

It was the Sabbath.

That single act of deliberate desecration — combined with a Roman procurator too corrupt to intervene, a Temple treasury raided in broad daylight, and a comedian's joke about "poor Florus" that led to three thousand six hundred dead in the streets of Jerusalem — lit the fuse on the war that would end the Second Temple.
