Matthew chapters 5 through 8 show what kind of faith and life Jesus Christ requires of the people of the kingdom of heaven, and that He is Almighty God who rules over sin, disease, demons, and all the things of nature. The Sermon on the Mount is not simply a lesson telling us to live morally good lives. It is the word for the people of the kingdom of heaven, teaching with what faith the person who has first received the remission of sins by the righteousness of God serves God and how he ought to live in this world.

The Beatitudes are not conditions for man to obtain salvation by perfecting eight virtues. They show that those who acknowledge that they have no righteousness of their own and long for the righteousness of God receive the remission of sins, the Holy Spirit, and the kingdom of heaven by believing in the gospel of the water and the Spirit, and that afterward, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, they bear the fruits of meekness, mercy, purity, and peace and endure even the persecution they receive because of the gospel with the hope of heaven.

But the blessing Jesus spoke of is different from people’s thoughts. Today’s passage is a word that looks deep into one’s own heart. To the person who thinks he is righteous because he has not murdered, Jesus said that whoever is angry with his brother shall be in danger of the judgment. To the person who thinks he is clean because he has not committed the act of adultery, He said that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery in his heart. People look at the results that appear outwardly, but the Lord looks at the heart, where sin begins.
