Matthew chapter 5 is the first chapter of the Sermon on the Mount, in which Jesus taught His disciples and the crowds on a mountain the heart and life of the people of the kingdom of God. Through the Beatitudes, Jesus declares that those who depend on God and seek righteousness, mercy, and peace are blessed. He then calls His disciples the salt and light of the world and reveals the true meaning of the Law down to the dimension of the heart, motives, and relationships. He warns against anger, lust, irresponsible divorce, false oaths, and retaliation, and at the end He tells us to love our enemies and to pray for those who persecute us.
