  • Make Time for Grief with Barri Leiner Grant - Make Time Podcast - Season 2 Episode 11
    2025/03/03

🎙️ Join *Make Time* podcast hosts Emma Heming Willis and Helen Christoni as they talk with Barri Leiner Grant, founder of The Memory Circle, about making time for grief. Barri lost her mother in her early twenties and found herself dealing with loss alone. She decided to create the space she was craving by hosting events for “motherless daughters,” eventually expanding this experience into The Memory Circle, a grief-focused therapy practice.

In this episode, Barri, Helen, and Emma talk about how to “tend to grief” by journaling, starting a “delight practice,” taking walks, and finding ways, big or small, to be with the person you’re grieving. They discuss different kinds of grief - the “acute” phase that occurs just after someone has passed and the “anticipatory grief” that can come from caregiving for a loved one.

Barri, Helen, and Emma talk about ways you can support grieving friends simply by showing up, inviting them along in everyday tasks, and reaching out to see how they need support. Helen shares her own experience of grieving the unexpected loss of her daughter Bella.

If you are grieving, you are not alone ❤️

    About Barri

Barri Leiner Grant is the Chief Grief Officer™ and founder of The Memory Circle. Barri left a career as a reporter to step into full-time work as a Certified Grief Coach. “I dabbled in small motherless daughter events as a peer, when I received my yoga and mediation training certification, and knew I needed to make the Circle bigger.” Barri’s mother Ellen died in 1993 and she dedicates this work to her and the resources she wishes she had herself. She has studied with the leading names in the grief space including grief certification and education with Claire Bidwell Smith, Hope Edelman and David Kessler. She combines her writing background and yoga/meditation training to craft a one-of-its-kind way forward in learning to live with loss. She hosts Circles and 1:1 sessions bathed in her grief tending techniques. Barri’s work has been featured in The Washington Post, Psychology Today, Rue Magazine, essays for Maria Shriver’s Sunday Paper and Zibby Magazine, on award winning podcasts, television appearances and radio shows.
