    We are discussing women in Bachchan’s life in these episodes. We spoke about Bachchan’s first wife “Shyama” in the previous episode and how she shaped poet’s life. In this episode, we are talking about “Iris”, who remained a mirage, a mystery in Bachchan’s life. This episode includes poems of an elusive Madhushala of life (a mirage).इन दिनों हम बात कर रहे हैं बच्चन बाबू के जीवन में आने वाली स्त्रियों की और पिछले अंक में सुनाया था किस्सा श्यामा का, जो कविराज की पहली पत्नी थी और श्यामा ने उनके जीवन पर क्या प्रभाव छोड़ा। इसी शृंखला में आज बात करते हैं आइरिस की, जो कवि के जीवन में एक मृगतृष्णा की तरह आई और हमेशा मृगतृष्णा ही बनी रही। Poems in this episode:प्राप्य नहीं है तो, हो जाती लुप्त नहीं फिर क्यों हाला,प्राप्य नहीं है तो, हो जाता लुप्त नहीं फिर क्यों प्याला,दूर न इतनी हिम्मत हारुँ, पास न इतनी पा जाऊँ,व्यर्थ मुझे दौड़ाती मरु में मृगजल बनकर मधुशाला ।।९५।तुम्हारे नील झील से नैन – नीर निर्झर से लहरे केशतुम्हारे तन का रेखाकार – वही कमनीय कलामय हाथकि जिसने रुचिर तुम्हारा देश – रचा गिरि-ताल-माल के साथ,करों में लतरों का लचकाव – करतलों में फूलों का वास,तुम्हारे नील झील-से नैन – नीर निर्झर से लहरे केशजो हाला मैं चाह रहा था, वह न मिली मुझको हाला,जो प्याला मैं माँग रहा था, वह न मिला मुझको प्याला,जिस साकी के पीछे मैं था दीवाना, न मिला साकी,जिसके पीछे था मैं पागल, हा न मिली वह मधुशाला!।९०।उस प्याले से प्यार मुझे जो दूर हथेली से प्याला,उस हाला से चाव मुझे जो दूर अधर से है हाला,प्यार नहीं पा जाने में है, पाने के अरमानों में!पा जाता तब, हाय, न इतनी प्यारी लगती मधुशाला ।।९९।मिले न, पर, ललचा-ललचा क्यों आकुल करती है हाला,मिले न, पर, तरसा तरसाकर क्यों तड़पाता है प्याला,हाय, नियति की विषम लेखनी, मस्तक पर यह खोद गई'दूर रहेगी मधु की धारा, पास रहेगी मधुशाला!'।९६।--------------------Thanks for listening :-) Do write a review and send your comments.     In the previous episode, we started a discussion on women in the life of Dr Harivansh Rai Bachchan and how they influenced his life and poetry. We started with ‘Champa’, who he called ‘Dryad of the Trees’. In this episode, we are talking about Bachchan’s lesser known first wife ‘Shyama’. पिछले अंक से हमने शुरुआत की थी एक चर्चा की – बच्चन बाबू के जीवन में कुछ महत्वपूर्ण स्त्रियों पर। सबसे पहले बात की थी चम्पा की, जो उनके बचपन के मित्र कर्कल की पत्नी थी और उन्होंने बच्चन बाबू को किस तरह प्रभावित किया। इसी सिलसिले को आगे बढ़ाते हुए, आज बात करते हैं श्यामा की। Poems in this episode: धुँधली-सी आवाज बुलाती ऊपर से, पर पंख कहाँ है, (याद कीजिए वृक्ष परी) छलना-सी धरती है मुझको और मुझे अंबर छलिया-सा। तन के सौ सुख, सौ सुविधा में मेरा मन बनवास दिया-सा। उसके उस सरलपने से मैंने था हृदय सजाया, नित नए मधुर गीतों से उसका उर था उकसाया। उस कल्पनाओं की कल कल्प-लता को था मैंने अपनाया; बहु नवल भावनाओं का उसमें पराग था पाया। मंद हास-सा उसके मृदु अधरों पर जो था मँडराया; औ’ उसकी सुखद सुरभि से - प्रति ‘निशि’ समीप खिंच आया मनाकर बहुत एक लट मैं तुम्हारी - लपेटे हुए पोर पर तर्जनी के पड़ा हूँ, बहुत ख़ुश, कि इन भाँवरों में - मिले फ़ॉर्मूले मुझे ज़िंदगी के, भँवर में पड़ा-सा हृदय घूमता है, - बदन पर लहर पर लहर चल रही है। न तुम सो रही हो, न मैं सो रहा हूँ, - मगर यामिनी बीच में ढल रही है। उठा करता था मन में प्रश्न - कि जाने क्या होगा उस पार निवारण करने में सन्देह - मज़हबी पोथे थे बेकार चले तुम, पूछा, हैं! किस ओर? - कहा बस तुमने एक ज़बान तुम्हें थी जिसकी खोज तलाश - उसी का करने अनुसंधान श्‍यामा रानी थी पड़ी रोग की शय्या पर - दो सौ सोलह दिन कठिन कष्‍ट में थे बीते, संघर्ष मौत से बचने और बचाने का - था छिड़ा हुआ, या हम जीतें या वह जीते। एक समय संतुष्ट बहुत था पा मैं थोड़ी-सी हाला, भोला-सा था मेरा साकी, छोटा-सा मेरा प्याला, छोटे-से इस जग की मेरे स्वर्ग बलाएँ लेता था, विस्तृत जग में, हाय, गई खो मेरी नन्ही मधुशाला!।१०८। -------------------- Thanks for listening :-) Do write a review and send your comments.     In the previous episode, we spoke about “Shanti path” in Madhushala, shared a beautiful piece from Rahi Masoom Raza's book Topi Shukla, some things about one carefree Hindi poet Pandey Bechan Sharma ‘Ugra’, and a story about the English poet Shelly and Keats. With this episode, we are starting a series about the women in Bachchan’s life and how they influenced the life and poetry of our Kaviraj. पिछले अंक में कुछ किस्से सुनाए थे मधुशाला के शान्ति पाठ के, एक किस्सा राही मासूम रज़ा की कहानी टोपी शुक्ला से, कुछ बातें हिंदी के अक्खड़ कवि उग्र जी के बारे में, और एक कहानी अंग्रेज़ी कवि शैली और कीट्स की। आज से बात शुरू करते हैं बच्चन बाबू के जीवन में आने वाली स्त्रियों की और किस तरह उन्होंने हमारे कविराज के जीवन और उनकी कविताओं को प्रभावित किया। Bachchan's poems in this episode: जिसकी कंचन की काया थी - जिसमें सब सुख की छाया थी, उसे मिला देना पड़ता है - पल-भर में मिट्टी के कण में! निर्ममता भी है जीवन में! मत देख, नज़र लग जा‌एगी - यह चिड़ियों के सुखधाम, सखे! - है यह पतझड़ की शाम सखे। नीलम से पल्लव टूट गए, मरकत-से साथी छूट गए - अटके फिर भी दो पीत पात जीवन-डाली को थाम सखे! है यह पतझड़ की शाम सखे। उठ पड़ा तूफान, देखो, मैं नहीं हैरान, देखो, एक झंझावात भीषण मैं हृदय में से चुका हूँ। मूल्य अब मैं दे चुका हूँ। नहीं खोजने जाता मरहम - होकर अपने प्रति अति निर्मम उर के घावों को आँसू के खारे जल से नहलाता हूँ। ऐसे मैं मन बहलाता हूँ। यदि इन अधरों से दो बातें प्रेम भरी करती हाला, यदि इन खाली हाथों का जी पल भर बहलाता प्याला, हानि बता, जग, तेरी क्या है, व्यर्थ मुझे बदनाम न कर, मेरे टूटे दिल का है बस एक खिलौना मधुशाला।।७७। Dinkar's Urvashi: और त्रिया जो अबल, मात्र आंसू, केवल करुणा है, वही बैठ सम्पूर्ण सृष्टि के महा मूल निस्तल में छिगुनी पर धारे समुद्र को - ऊंचा किए हुए है Raskhan's savaiya: सेष, गनेस, महेस, दिनेस, सुरेसहु जाहि निरंतर गावैं। जाहि अनादि अनंत अखंड अछेद अभेद सुबेद बतावैं। नारद से सुक ब्‍यास रहैं पचि हारे तऊ पुनि पार न पावैं। ताहि अहीर की छोहरियाँ छछिया भरि छाछ पै नाच नचावैं -------------------- Thanks for listening :-) Do write a review and send your comments.     In the previous episode, we spoke about stages of life after youth, especially the final mile. There was one story about the death of Dr Bachchan’s first wife “Shyama”. In this episode, we are talking about Pandey Bechan Sharma ‘Ugra’, and English poets John Keats and PB Shelley.

    पिछले अंक में बात की थी जीवन में यौवन से आगे की अवस्थाओं पर, अंतिम पड़ाव पर, और एक बात बच्चन बाबू की पहली पत्नी श्यामा की मृत्यु के बाद के दिनों से। आज उसी सिलसिले को आगे बढ़ाते हैं, बात एक फक्कड़ कवि की, अंग्रेज़ी कवि जॉन कीट्स और शैली की, और शुरुआत करते हैं एक किस्से से.

    और चिता पर जाये उंढेला पात्र न घ्रित का, पर प्याला - घंट बंधे अंगूर लता में मध्य न जल हो, पर हाला,

    प्राण प्रिये यदि श्राद्ध करो तुम मेरा तो ऐसे करना - पीने वालों को बुलवा कर खुलवा देना मधुशाला ।।८४।


    मेरे शव पर वह रोये, हो जिसके आंसू में हाला - आह भरे वो, जो हो सुरभित मदिरा पी कर मतवाला,

    दे मुझको वो कांधा जिनके पग मद डगमग होते हों - और जलूं उस ठौर जहां पर कभी रही हो मधुशाला ।।८३।


    यम ले चलता है मुझको तो, चलने दे लेकर हाला - चलने दे साकी को मेरे साथ लिए कर में प्याला,

    स्वर्ग, नरक या जहाँ कहीं भी तेरा जी हो लेकर चल - ठौर सभी हैं एक तरह के साथ रहे यदि मधुशाला ।।८७।

    Welcome to The Madhushala Podcast (मधुशाला मंथन), based on Harivansh Rai Bachchan's epic poetry. In this, we explore the soul and essence of Hindi poetry, poet's life-stories, philosophy and a bit of India's history.

    In the previous episode, we talked about the stages of life in Madhushala, especially the significance of youth, with a reference from Shivaji Savant’s famous book ‘Mrityunjay’. In today’s episode, we move on from youth towards the sunset of life and a story from the passing away of Bachchan’s first wife – Shyama.


    पिछले अंक में बात की थी जीवन की अवस्थाओं पर, विशेषकर मानव जीवन में यौवन के महत्व की, यौवन या तारुण्य क्या होता है, उसका रंग रूप क्या होता है, और सुनाई थी यौवन के भाव की कुछ कविताएं। आज बात करते हैं जीवन में यौवन से आगे की अवस्थाओं पर, अंतिम पड़ाव पर, और एक बात उनकी पहली पत्नी श्यामा की मृत्यु के बाद के दिनों से।


    मेरे अधरों पर हो अंतिम वस्तु न तुलसी-दल,प्याला, मेरी जीव्हा पर हो अंतिम वस्तु न गंगाजल, हाला,

    मेरे शव के पीछे चलने वालों, याद इसे रखना - राम नाम है सत्य न कहना, कहना सच्ची मधुशाला ।।८२।


    नाम अगर कोई पूछे तो, कहना बस पीनेवाला - काम ढालना, और ढलाना सबको मदिरा का प्याला,

    जाति प्रिये, पूछे यदि कोई कह देना दीवानों की - धर्म बताना प्यालों की ले माला जपना मधुशाला ।।८५।


    मृत्यु शय्या पर पड़े अति रुग्ण की अन्तिम हँसी-सी

    यत्न करके खिल रही है - एक लघु कलिका निराली!

    In the ⁠previous episode⁠, we told you about a road accident of Bachchan family and how Madhushala came to her poet’s rescue. Today, we talk about the stages of life, especially the significance of youth, with a reference from Shivaji Savant’s famous book ‘Mrityunjay’ and Robert Browning's Rabbi Ben Ezra.


    पिछले अंक में बात की थी बच्चन परिवार के साथ घटी एक सड़क दुर्घटना की और किस तरह उनकी मधुशाला ने उन्हें एक मुसीबत से बचाया था। आज बात करते हैं जीवन की अवस्थाओं पर, विशेषकर - मानव जीवन में यौवन के महत्व की, यौवन के रंगों की, और यौवन के बीत जाने की।


    ढलक रही हो तन के घट से, संगिनि, जब जीवन-हाला; पात्र गरल का ले जब अंतिम साकी हो आनेवाला,

    हाथ परस भूले प्याले का, स्वाद-सुरा जीव्हा भूले; कानों में तुम कहती रहना, मधुकण, प्याला,मधुशाला ।।८१।


    गिरती जाती है दिन प्रतिदन प्रणयनी प्राणों की हाला; भग्न हुआ जाता दिन प्रतिदन सुभगे मेरा तन प्याला,

    रूठ रहा है मुझसे रूपसी, दिन दिन यौवन का साकी; सूख रही है दिन दिन सुन्दरी, मेरी जीवन मधुशाला ।।७९।


    वो काली काली बदलियाँ, उफ़ुक़ पे हो गईं अयाँ

    वो इक हुजूम-ए-मय-कशाँ, है सू-ए-मय-कदा रवाँ

    ये क्या गुमाँ है बद-गुमाँ, समझ न मुझ को ना-तवाँ

    ख़याल-ए-ज़ोहद अभी कहाँ, अभी तो मैं जवान हूँ

    In the previous episode, we had talked about the importance of dissatisfaction in life and told why Bachchan had to leave his well-organized life and go for military training, and some poems related to the same. Today let us tell you an incident about the Bachchan couple's road accident and how his poetry saved them.


    पिछले अंक में बात की थी जीवन में असंतोष के महत्व की और बताया था कि बच्चन बाबू को अपना सुव्यवस्थित जीवन छोड़ कर फ़ौजी ट्रैनिंग के लिए क्यों जाना पड़ा, और उसी से जुड़ी कुछ कविताएं। आज सुनाते हैं एक किस्सा बच्चन दंपति की सड़क दुर्घटना का और कैसे उनकी कविता ने उन्हें बचा लिया। आज की कहानी का आरंभ मधुशाला की इस कविता के साथ करते हैं जिसने शायद इस घटना को घटित होने से पहले ही देख लिया था –


    यम आएगा लेने जब, तब खूब चलूँगा पी हाला, पीड़ा, संकट, कष्ट नरक के क्या समझेगा मतवाला,

    क्रूर, कठोर, कुटिल, कुविचारी, अन्यायी यमराजों के डंडों की जब मार पड़ेगी, आड़ करेगी मधुशाला ।।७६।

    In the ⁠⁠previous episode⁠⁠, we had talked about the fragility of life, a small discussion on the ornaments of poetry called “Alankar”, and told why Bachchan's family members used to hide certain things from him. Today’s episode talks about the inherent dissatisfaction of man and why our poet had to undergo military training at one time. (⁠⁠⁠Read more here⁠⁠⁠). पिछले अंक में हमने जीवन की क्षण-भंगुरता पर बात की थी, एक छोटी सी चर्चा कविता के आभूषण अलंकारों पर, और बताया था कि बच्चन बाबू के परिवार जन कुछ बातें उनसे छुपा क्यों जाते थे। आज के अंक में बात मनुष्य के अंतर्निहित असंतोष की और हमारे कविराज को एक समय मिलिट्री ट्रैनिंग क्यों करनी पड़ी। यम आयेगा साकी बनकर साथ लिए काली हाला, पी न होश में फिर आएगा सुरा-विसुध यह मतवाला,

    यह अंतिम बेहोशी, अंतिम साकी, अंतिम प्याला है, पथिक, प्यार से पीना इसको फिर न मिलेगी मधुशाला ।।८०।

    Has dried the sap out of my veins, and rent. Spontaneous joy and natural content. Out of my heart. There's something ails our colt
    That must, as if it had not holy blood. Nor on Olympus leaped from cloud to cloud, Shiver under the lash, strain, sweat and jolt.
    As though it dragged road metal.

    My curse on plays, That have to be set up in fifty ways, On the day's war with every knave and dolt, Theatre business, management of men.
