  • A Monster Calls Book Review
    2025/09/05

Alex has picked a powerful book for this month. We read A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness. It is a middle school read with lots of pictures that are stunning and add to the text amazingly. A book truly worth reading. Even the curmudgeon, Joe, was impressed with this book.

Next month Joe has picked a book that he doesn't love, but has had trouble forgetting. And really, isn't that what books are supposed to do? Stick with us in ways that we would never have expected? Joe will be having us all read The Wanting Seed by Anthony Burgess. Who would have guessed, the author who wrote A Clockwork Orange would be our first repeat author. Both brothers would have put money down for some of the more popular authors they have already covered... So, make sure you put down a notification for next month, so you don't forget to give it a listen.

Just as a reminder, we post twice monthly. On the 5th we post our book of the month. And on the 20th we will provide you lovely listeners with a bonus episode (as noted, the brothers are both becoming very busy with life, so this schedule may be changing; please stay tuned for any updates that they will be making). Please make sure to subscribe so that you never miss an episode. And please be active listeners and comment and rate on how you think we are doing. All the details below.

Please help us grow this podcast. The more listeners we get the more we can do. While Alex and Joe love talking books it is nice to know we aren't the only two out there blathering into the universe.

  • Bonus Episode: Movie to Book Comparison of Fear and Loathing
    2025/08/20

Joe and Alex have a super special bonus episode for everyone today. We had a fan request for a book, and we decided to combine the book with a movie critique.

The book (and movie) that we are covering today is, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson. A drug fueled ride of extremes that will make you sick with envy. Or make you want to puke with all the excess. Either way, we hope that you enjoy our discussion. In the comments on Spotify, give us some more book to movie comparisons you might enjoy. Alex and Joe will do their best to get to them.

Next month the brothers are covering the moving and iconic book A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness. It is a can't miss kind of book. So mark it in your calendars, September 5th, the episode will be airing.

Just as a reminder, we post twice monthly. On the 5th we post our book of the month. • Let's Pretend this Never Happened Book Review
    2025/08/05

Joe is back to torturing everyone again with his memoirs. He swears this one is better though. Alex may need some convincing. This month the brothers read Let's Pretend this Never Happened: A Mostly True Memoir by Jenny Lawson. It is a rip-roaring life to be shared, full of mental illness, awkward childhoods, and things that can only happen in Texas. (Just a note from Alex: DO NOT LISTEN TO THE AUDIOBOOK!!! Seriously. It's bad.)

Next month, Alex is picking one of his favorite books of all time. Let's see if Joe is able to tear down another book and trample all over his feelings. Alex has picked, A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness. That will be coming out on September 5th. So make sure you mark the date on your calendar, it's bound to be a special one.

• Bonus Episode; The Trouble with Heroes
    2025/07/20

Becky is joining the show again for this latest edition of bonus episodes! She has a new favorite book to talk about, The Trouble with Heroes by Kate Messner. This is an exciting book for young adult and middle school readers. So listen in and see what all the fuss is about.

I do need to apologize for the audio quality on this one. This was a last minute recording and editing thing. A few other episodes that the brothers had hoped to have recorded already, have not come to fruition. Joe will work much harder in the future to speak into the mic and at a volume that the mic can actually pick up.

Next month Joe has picked another memoir. A truly hilarious book by a woman that became famous from her blogging about her wacky life. We will be reading Let's Pretend This Never Happened (A Mostly True Memoir) by Jenny Lawson. (A little bit of a spoiler, if you are reading along with us on this, we recommend avoiding the audio book...)

Just as a reminder, we post twice monthly. On the 5th we post our book of the month. • From Hell Book Review
    2025/07/05

Alex is changing up the format again. Keeping it fresh even, maybe. This month he picked a book that is completely different from what we have been reading. Instead of describing imagery of words on page, Alex is having us describe pictures on paper. That's right. We are discussing a graphic novel. Not just any graphic novel, either, but one of the greatest ever written by one of the greatest authors of that medium.

This month we read From Hell by Alan Moore. we analyze one of the most famous works from one of the most famous authors of the graphic novel world, breaking down our thoughts on where it goes so superbly well, and where things fall a bit flat. Joe also re-watched the movie of the same name and briefly touches on why Moore hated that so much and if Moore was justified.

  • Darkness Over Arkham Play Through
    2025/06/20

This bonus episode is a little different. This month Alex thought it might be fun for Joe to see how he does in a Choose Your Own Adventure style story. Joe, through bad experiences in 3rd grade, knew he would struggle to make it far. The book that Alex picked for this strange and bizarre adventure was Darkness Over Arkham by Jonathan Green. It is a Lovecraftian mystery, where you, the intrepid adventurer, must solve the strange happenings around the college town of Arkham.

As said, this is a different sort of episode. A lot of reading from Alex and Joe trying to voice his decision making at each juncture. If this type of episode was entertaining, let us know. If not, also tell us. Alex wants to do a lot more of these sorts of things. So, let us know if we have stumbled onto something that is good content. A poll on Spotify should go live with this episode. Check the link for it below or through our insta.

Next month, for our beginning of the month book pick, Alex has chosen to return to the darker and grittier world of murder and mayhem. He has picked a graphic novel of great renown. From Hell by Alan Moore will be our first attempt to discussing the popular literary method of graphic novels. So make sure you don't miss it. It'll be out July 5th.

Just as a reminder, we post twice monthly. On the 5th we post our book of the month. And on the 20th we will provide you lovely listeners with a bonus episode (as noted, the brothers are both becoming very busy with life, so this schedule may be changing; please stay tuned for any updates that they will be making).
