概要

You've built a solid service based business. You're booked out, your clients get results, and everyone keeps telling you to build digital products. But no one tells you how to build the system that ties into your actual business. That's why you're still waiting to work on that automatic income you've been talking about for years.

Katy Calls BS is for established service based business owners who are done guessing. Hosted by instructional designer Katy Miller, each episode cuts through the noise, calls out bad advice that's keeping you stuck, and gives you straight talk on building the learning side of your business the right way.

No fluff. No hand-holding. No more waiting.

  • Are Memberships the New Courses?
    2026/04/13

We're hearing a lot about memberships lately. Recurring revenue, predictable income, and building a community of people coming back each month.

It sounds familiar. Kind of like what we heard about courses five years ago. The membership failure rate is tracking in the same way too. Not because they don't work, they can, just like courses, but the designs are all over the place.

This episode is for the business owner who launched a membership but is drowning in content creation or the one wondering if this is the right move for their business. Like any digital product, they have to be built to work with your business not just opened for fun.

    In this episode:

    • How the course model and membership model compare
    • The three common design failures of most memberships
    • Where instructional design and adult learning theory can help you from an instructional designer
    • When a membership is the right move and what to build if it's not

Building a membership could be the best move for your business or it could become your second job. If it doubles your work, it's the design, not you.

If you want to figure out which digital product model fits your business right now, book a Digital Product Infrastructure Audit with Katy. Book online to get started.

  • You Can't Be the Expert in Your Comfort Zone
    2026/04/06

I just got back from the Creative Educator Conference in Dallas. I need to tell you what happened because I think there is something in it for every business owner, especially the introverts.

Walking into a room full of strangers and starting a conversation is literally my nightmare. But I went and did it anyway. I introduced myself to people, told them what I do, got some blank stares, but it was what happened after that I have to share.

We are talking about the BS of staying in your comfort zone. Not in the way everyone talks about it though. Comfort zone dressed up as strategy. The staying vague, behind the scenes, waiting until you feel ready, it almost feels like you are being careful. But it can cost you so much of what you are building.

    In this episode:

    • Why comfort zone avoidance is keeping your expertise invisible
    • Choosing courage over comfort at the conference and how you can too
    • Why discomfort is not a stop sign
    • What to do when you get a blank stare
    • Three places to start this week

Expertise in your comfort zone stays invisible. Ready to figure out how to turn your expertise into a digital product? Book your audit to get started!
