 Set in colonial Uttar Pradesh of the 1930’s, Premchand’s literary classic Karmabhumi unfolds in the midst of political revolutions and reforms, as a young and heavily principled Amarkant struggles to define his place and purpose in his tumultuous world. Raised by a dogmatic father, Amarkant struggles to assert his passion for studies and is pressured to focus on the family business instead. His life is complicated by marriage to a woman who considers herself to be his intellectual superior. Stuck between a father who dictates and a wife who wants to rule, Amarkant falls for a dynamic young woman which challenges him further.
