In this episode of the Just Like Angels Podcast, host Janna Johnson sits down with Delton Travis, Director of Just Like Angels Childcare Center, for an honest conversation about fatherhood, positive male role models, and the influence a consistent male presence can have on a child’s development.

Delton has been part of the Just Like Angels family for eight years. He began as a van driver, became the after-school coordinator, advanced to assistant director, and now serves as the center’s active director. As one of only two male employees among 25 staff members, Delton offers a valuable perspective on the need for more men—especially Black men—in childcare and early childhood leadership.

Janna and Delton share their different experiences with fatherhood. Janna reflects on growing up with an active and supportive father who remains present in her life today. Delton shares how his father’s incarceration when Delton was 13 resulted in 15 years without his physical presence and affected Delton’s connection to his father’s side of the family.

They also discuss the powerful bonds children form with positive male caregivers. Some children at Just Like Angels affectionately call Delton “Dad” or “Uncle Delton,” reflecting the love, warmth, and security he brings to the center. Janna has also observed positive changes in children’s behavior, energy, and respect when dependable male figures and volunteers are present.

The conversation highlights an encouraging shift at Just Like Angels: more fathers are taking active roles in their children’s education and care. Dads are attending tours, checking on classroom progress, asking about homework, volunteering, managing childcare logistics, and providing greater support at home.

Janna and Delton also examine the reality of father absence, the underrepresentation of men in childcare, and the stereotypes that may discourage men from pursuing careers in the field. Their message is clear: children need caring, consistent adults, and men have an important place in nurturing, educating, and supporting the next generation.
