  • IWP Ep86 Unfiltered - Conversations About Wine - Panel 1 Adaptation
    2025/08/01

IWP Ep86 Unfiltered Panel 1 - Adaptation. Today and the next couple episodes we’ll be presenting the recorded panels from “Unfiltered - Conversations about wine” It took place on July 26th at Donkey at Goat. Jared Brandt has always been passionate about wine education and together with Andrew Sullivan they put on the first annual version of this festival. Their aim is to elevate the status and awareness of our local natural and low intervention winemakers through education and community. It’s always been a pet peeve of mine when local wines aren’t represented on local wine lists, whether retail or restaurant. The first panel, “Adaptation” was attempting to answer the questions- Are low-intervention and natural winemaking increasingly incompatible with sustainability? What will winemaking in the region look like as temperatures rise and rainfall patterns shift? More spraying? Vineyard canopies? More mechanization? Genetic engineering? Different varietals? Even earlier harvests? Higher elevations?

Darek Trowbridge of Old World Winery moderated the panel hosting guests, Dr. Kaan Kurtural formerly of UC Davis, now producing his own wines, Dr. Whendee Silver and Dr. Tibisay Perez both of University California Berkely and Matt Niess of North American Press.

  • IWP Ep84 The Dionysian Manifesto of Châteauneuf du Fargosonini - (Work in Progress)
    2025/07/18

The Dionysian Manifesto of Châteauneuf du Fargosonini - (Work in Progress) - Alejandro has been reading excerpts of Châteauneuf du Fargosonini's Dionysian manifesto at tastings around California. We originally recorded it at the wonderful Studio Aurora in San Francisco where he was followed by Sophia Lemaire, wine buyer at Studio Aurora performing a Gregorian chant. We unfortunately had some sound issues on Alejandro's manifesto but we re-recorded it the next day at my house where Alejandro added some context to certain sections, his reading will be followed by Sophia’s performance and some music. I left this as a monologue without me interfering to keep some mystery. I hope you enjoy this unique episode.

I wanted to let you know about the Unfiltered Wine festival at Donkey and Goat in Berkely on Saturday July 26. I’ll be there with a booth, Alejandro and other podcast guests like Perch, BXT, Cary Q, North American Press, 2 Shepherds, Florez, Terah, Catch and release, Tessier as well as a bunch more great wineries will be pouring along with 3 important panels on Adaptation, Terrior and Natural winemaking.

  • IWP Ep83 Antoine and Delphin Delmas - Pioneer Winegrowers of Santa Clara Valley
    2025/07/04

IWP Ep83 Antoine and Delphin Delmas - Pioneer Winegrowers of Santa Clara Valley. Today we are going to hear about Antoine and Delphin Delmas. They were father and son. Antoine was a pioneer grape importer and grower in the Santa Clara Valley. Bringing some of the first importations of varieties to the US or California. Delphin was his son and more focussed on winemaking. We touch on some unique early California stories and how San Jose differed from some of the other California cities. There are great first hand accounts of some of the earliest mechanized winemaking in California and a touch more of the California Wine Association.

    2025/06/20

IWP Ep82 Bradford Taylor - Ordinaire and Diversey Wine. Today I’m talking with Bradford Taylor of Ordinaire and Diversey Wines. We discuss how Ordinaire came to be, it’s early days, some of the challenges that made it double down on natural wine, where the shop fits into the natural wines scene and much more. It’s always a vibrant place with it’s own personality. Producers tend to congregate there and events like Brumaire help to spread the word of natural wine even more. You can find the shop at https://ordinairewine.com/ or even better in person at 3354 Grand Ave or follow the shop at http://instagram.com/ordinaire_oakland

  • IWP Ep79 Tony Coturri and Noel Diaz - A Conversation
    2025/05/09

IWP Ep79 Tony Coturri and Noel Diaz - A conversation. Today’s episode is a little different. A conversation between Noel Diaz of Purity Wine, the Study wine bar and the Richmond Wine Collective, he was also my very first interview for the podcast, way back on episode 2 and Tony Coturri of the Coturri winery, who has been making natural wines longer than anyone in California. Noel came up with the idea and Tony was up for it! They discuss what has changed over the last 50 years in California Natural wine, some of the struggles and the surprising bright spots, there’s lots of talk about farming and how wine fits in with the rest of our food. We had a great time sneaking the recording in while By The Way was getting started. You can find Noel and Barrie's wines at PurityWine.net or follow them @puritywine Tony’s wines can be found at Coturriwinery.com or follow him at cotturi_winery
