Hakeem Sekou Jeffries (born August 4, 1970) is an American politician and attorney who has been serving as the U.S. Representative for New York's 8th congressional district since 2013. A member of the Democratic Party, Jeffries has emerged as a prominent figure in the party and currently serves as the House Minority Leader.
Early Life and Education: Born in Brooklyn, New York, to Laneda and Marland Jeffries, Hakeem Jeffries grew up in Crown Heights, a diverse neighborhood in the heart of the city. His mother worked as a social worker, while his father was employed as a state substance-abuse counselor. From a young age, Jeffries was exposed to the importance of public service and the value of education.
Jeffries attended Midwood High School, a public school in Brooklyn known for its rigorous academic program. He excelled in his studies and graduated in 1988.
