  • Episode 4: Gender Sensitive Mental Healthcare

    Thelatest episode of the IJPM Podcast explores the topic of gender-sensitive mental healthcare.

    Dr Sean Crowley, Trainee Editor of the IJPM, sat down with Professor Siobhan McHale and Dr Yvonne Hartnett to discuss their recent article, Providing Gender-Sensitive Mental Healthcare to Address the Specific Needs of Women. They discuss a wide range of topics including gender disparities in healthcare, women as research participants and biases in doctor-patient interactions for women.

    Professor Siobhan McHale is a consultant liaison psychiatrist working in Beaumont Hospital in Dublin. She has had an interest in in women’s healthcare. Dr Yvonne Hartnett has just finished her specialist training in liaison and perinatal psychiatry and is currently working as an Aspire Fellow in women’s health in St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin. Women’s health has been the focus of her PhD.

  • Episode 3: Challenges for An Garda Síochána as First Responders to Children and Young People with Mental Health Crises

    Professor Anne Doherty, Social Media Editor of the Irish Journal of Psychological Medicine, is joined by Professor Fiona McNicholas and Dr Louise Rooney to discuss their recent paper for the IJPM titled "A qualitative study exploring the challenges for a national police force as first responders to children and young people presenting with mental health crises: perspectives of emergency department professionals".


    Professor McNicholas is Professor of Child Psychiatry at University College Dublin and a Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist at Crumlin Hospital and the Lucena Clinic.


    Dr Rooney is a criminologist with experience conducting applied research in both criminal justice and health settings.

    In this episode we focus on research around Crisis Resolution Teams, as featured in the March issue of the IJPM.

    Dr Mohamed Alsaffar, Trainee Editor of the IJPM, sat down with Dr Karen O’Connor and Dr Sean Crowley to discuss their recent article, The Clinical Impact of a Crisis Resolution Home Treatment Team and the significance within the wider context of Crisis Resolution Services in Ireland.

    Dr Sean Crowley, lead author of this paper, is a Higher Specialist Trainee in Psychiatry, specialising in General Adult Psychiatry and Psychiatry of Old Age.

    Dr Karen O’Connor is Consultant Psychiatrist for the Home Based Treatment Team and RISE Early Intervention in Psychosis Service, South Lee Mental Health Services, Cork. She is also the National Clinical Lead for Early Intervention in Psychosis and has published widely in this area.

  • Episode 1: Perinatal Mental Health

    In this episode we focus on Perinatal Mental Health research, the topic of our latest special themed issue. Dr Mohamed Alsaffar, Trainee Editor of the IJPM sat down with Dr Richard Duffy, guest editor of the special themed issue.

    Dr Duffy is a Consultant Psychiatrist in the Specialist Perinatal Mental Health Service at the Rotunda Hospital and Consultant Liaison Psychiatrist at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital. He is also Clinical Lecturer/Assistant Professor at University College Dublin. He has published widely in the field of perinatal mental health and human rights in mental healthcare and is the author of the book, India’s Mental Healthcare Act, 2017: Building Laws, Protecting Rights.
