  • Home Health Suit + Scrubs Podcast Episode 14: Social Work in Home Health: Beyond the Referral
    2025/06/12

    Send us a text

In this episode of Home Health Suit and Scrubs Podcast, three home health physical therapists interview Liz Peto, LCSW, a social worker who transitioned to home health six months ago. Working in a unique community-based program with six-month patient follow-up, Liz reveals the extensive scope of social work services that many therapists don't realize.

Beyond basic referrals, Liz provides comprehensive financial support, including grant applications, recently securing $1,100 monthly COBRA coverage through a neurological condition grant. She handles Medicaid applications, disability claims, connects patients to community resources, and provides ongoing mental health counseling that's often inaccessible to homebound patients. Her extended timeline allows for meaningful rapport building and real problem-solving in patients' actual environments.

Team communication emerged as crucial, with shared patient updates providing valuable clinical insights across disciplines. The therapists discussed what makes home health special: treating patients in their most comfortable environments and addressing meaningful goals in real-life settings.

Liz's key message: "Never be afraid to consult... everybody just wants to be included and treat someone as part of an interdisciplinary team." Social workers can handle complex psychosocial issues, allowing therapists to focus on their clinical expertise while ensuring comprehensive patient care.

    About the Episode

Ever gotten that "something's not right" feeling walking up to a patient's house? This week, we're talking safety with Bruce Asbury, who spent 25+ years in law enforcement and executive/site security for Charter Communications.

Bruce doesn't sugarcoat anything. We cover the real stuff - from doing your homework before visits to handling aggressive pets and people. He walks us through de-escalation techniques that work and explains when it's time to walk away - and how.

The conversation gets practical: Can you carry pepper spray? (Yes, but know which way the wind's blowing.) What about guns? (His answer might surprise you.) How do you get help when you can't announce you're calling 911? And yes, we even tackle whether wearing scrubs helps you avoid getting a traffic ticket.

Bruce's philosophy? "Be prepared, not paranoid." Trust your gut, know your exits, and have a plan. Whether you're new to home health or a seasoned pro, this episode gives you a solid game plan for staying safe while doing your job.

    About Our Guest

Bruce Asbury brings a unique perspective, with his background in violent crime task forces, executive protection, and managing security for a company with over 100,000 employees across 41 states. • Home Health Suit + Scrubs Podcast Episode 12: From Field Clinician to Executive - One SLP's Journey
    2025/05/28

    Send us a text

This episode is an absolute must-listen for anyone in home health looking to expand their horizons!

Our guest, Teresa Davis, takes us on her incredible journey from a speech-language pathologist who was initially terrified of home health to becoming the Executive Director of Hospice and Palliative Care Services at Accent Care in Chicago. Teresa drops serious knowledge bombs about what speech therapists bring to the table - think respiratory therapy for COPD and Parkinson's patients, breathing techniques for anxiety management, and how they can complement PT goals in ways you probably never realized.

But the real magic happens when she shares her career transition story, revealing how every time someone told her "you can't do that," it became fuel for her next big move - from clinician to rehab manager to business development to executive leadership. Her philosophy is pure gold: treat the whole patient, prioritize customer service, be a servant leader who gets in the weeds with your team, and never stop learning. Teresa is honest about the daily challenges we all face in home health - from creating your own materials to obtaining additional testing for homebound patients - but she also shares game-changing solutions, like mobile swallow study trucks, that most of us didn't even know existed.

This conversation is packed with practical insights and career inspiration that even Dan C. said he's going to rewatch. And, we're already planning a Part 2 to dive deeper into her leadership transition strategies.

Whether you're a treating clinician wondering what's next in your career or a manager looking to lead with more impact, Teresa's story proves that your clinical background is your superpower for leadership roles.

  • Care in Motion Home Health Podcast Episode 10: Home Health: When Home Health Goes Viral: The Faces Behind Your Favorite Feed
    2025/05/14

    Send us a text

Wow, Episode 10 of the Care in Motion Podcast was so fun! We got to hang out with Dan and Lisa, the creative minds behind some of the most popular home health social media accounts out there.

Dan told us the hilarious backstory of how "Rose" came to be – picture him sitting in his car, drowning in startup documentation on a beautiful day, thinking "I have to make fun of this ridiculousness!" His first healthcare post blew up with 4,000 views; the rest is history. And that voice? It's just something he's been doing for decades, inspired by conversations with his wife (who's also a PT) about their workdays.

Lisa started Home Health Chronicles after noticing nobody represented the home health world on social media. Despite being self-described as "shy" and "not that funny," she jumped in headfirst, creating memes about our daily struggles. Her content has evolved to include those anonymous confessions that sometimes make you go "Wait, that's Medicare fraud!" 😳

The best part? Hearing how their content has created this amazing sense of community. Dan shared stories of people playing his videos at the start of meetings to lighten the mood, and Lisa talked about how her page gives isolated clinicians a place to feel understood. They've both been recognized in public – Dan at his daughter's soccer game and in Costco (of course!), while Lisa is just starting to put herself out there more.

It was a genuine conversation about using humor to cope with healthcare challenges while creating connections in a field where you don't always get to see your coworkers. If you're in home health, you'll relate!

    2025/05/07

    Send us a text

In this engaging ninth episode of the Care in Motion Podcast, hosts discuss the critical aspects of creating effective home exercise programs (HEPs) for patients and navigating continuing education requirements as physical therapists.

The conversation kicks off with practical insights about designing patient-specific exercise programs. The hosts share their approaches to introducing exercises gradually, emphasizing the importance of starting with just 2-3 fundamental exercises rather than overwhelming patients with extensive routines. They discuss strategies for improving patient compliance, including connecting exercises to meaningful personal goals, using patient-friendly terminology, and ensuring proper demonstration.

Fascinating patient stories highlight the impact of motivation and goal-setting, including a remarkable 97-year-old who excelled in therapy due to her strong desire to return to her senior center activities. The therapists also address the delicate balance of challenging patients appropriately without discouraging them.

The second half of the episode explores continuing education requirements across different states, comparing online versus in-person learning experiences, and sharing resources for tracking and completing CEUs efficiently. The hosts desire more home health-specific educational opportunities and scenario-based training relevant to their practice setting.

Whether you're a physical therapy professional looking to enhance your home exercise programming or a clinician navigating CEU requirements, this episode offers valuable insights and practical strategies for elevating your practice.
